Organization: NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia (an independent state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America) is dedicated to building and sustaining a constituency that uses the state-level political process to guarantee reproductive freedom for all, including family planning, sexuality education, maternal health care, and safe, legal abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is a grassroots 501(c)(4) organization, with a 501(c)(3) Foundation arm and a political action committee (PAC).

Position: The Development & Events Intern will work with the deputy director and communications & membership manager on efforts to communicate with our membership and secure the resources needed to pursue our mission of protecting and expanding reproductive choice in Virginia. The intern will be primarily responsible for donor research and organization, assisting in communications with supporters, and in the execution of fundraising events and other outreach activities.

The intern will gain experience necessary for working in non-profit development and first-hand knowledge of pro-choice messaging, advocacy, and activism. The intern will be partially responsible for communicating with NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's members and activists through our blog and social media platforms. In addition to development tasks, the intern will have opportunities to contribute to NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's communication and program efforts.

Intern Activities:

  • Work with staff to research donor prospects, improve donor database information and organization, and assist with management of donor outreach calendar.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of house parties, happy hours, and other special events to engage members and raise funds.
  • Assist with member and activist communication through email alerts and social media platforms (blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and publications such as annual report.
  • Various office and administrative activities as necessary, such as creation of contribution acknowledgements and assisting with donor mailings.

Desired Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this internship is a current student or recent graduate with dedication to reproductive rights and health issues and interest in learning about the development operations of a non-profit advocacy organization.

  • Support and enthusiasm for NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's mission to defend and expand the full range of reproductive rights and health care options for women, including abortion, birth control, sex education, bearing healthy children, and adoption. Knowledge of current reproductive rights issues and experience with pro-choice or reproductive justice activism is ideal.
  • Strong writer, researcher and editor familiar with Microsoft Office and social media applications. Experience with website/blog management, desktop publishing, image editing, or other computer skills are a plus.
  • Experience with donor databases or other systems for tracking and communicating with donors and activists.
  • Activist, political, and/or non-profit experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in cooperative decision-making settings.

Internship details/requirements: The ideal candidate will be available 20-32 hours per week for a period of at least 8-10 weeks during summer 2017 (between May and August). The majority of internship activities will take place at our office in Old Town Alexandria (Metrorail and Metrobus accessible) during office hours (9am-5pm, Mon-Fri), but options for doing some work remotely are also available. There will also be some night and weekend events where the intern will be needed.

 

Compensation: A stipend will be provided and/or we will work with students on receiving academic credit if applicable. Stipend amount will depend on numbers of hours/weeks available to work.
