Organization: NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia (an independent state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America) is dedicated to building and sustaining a constituency that uses the state-level political process to guarantee reproductive freedom for all, including family planning, sexuality education, maternal health care, and safe, legal abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is a grassroots 501(c)(4) organization, with a 501(c)(3) Foundation arm and a political action committee (PAC).

Position: The Summer 2017 Advocacy and Communications Intern will work closely with the Campaigns Director and the Communications & Membership Manager to execute electoral, legislative, and advocacy campaigns, as well as on efforts to communicate with our membership, the public, and the press. The position will be responsible for assisting in internal and external communications with members, activists, volunteers and the media. The intern will gain skills and experience necessary for working in communications and/or field organizing for a non-profit organization or electoral campaign, as well as knowledge of pro-choice messaging, advocacy, and activism. The intern will assist the staff in communicating with NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's members and activists through our website, blog, email listserv, and social media platforms. In addition to advocacy and communications tasks, the intern will have opportunities to contribute to NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's program work to support pro-choice education, awareness and activism across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Intern Activities:

Social Media/Website

  • Regularly write and update content on website, blog and social media platforms to keep membership informed on current work and action opportunities.
  • Brainstorm new ideas to expand social media, blog and website activities and effectiveness and to track social media goals and progress.

Communications

  • Monitor statewide media on a daily basis for relevant news stories; gather and record news clips; maintain media tracking sheet.
  • Help respond to or publicize breaking news through social media and press/blogger outreach.
  • Help draft sample letters to the editor and op-ed pieces for activists or for personal submission.

Organizing/Advocacy

  • Lead off-site community engagement activities, including tabling at local farmer's markets, fairs, festivals, and other public events.
  • Provide support for the 2017 VA gubernatorial primary, including voter engagement and volunteer mobilization.
  • Assist in planning of fall Leadership & Advocacy Summits, including logistics, advertising, recruitment, and programmatic planning.
  • Assist in planning of other pro-choice advocacy events to educate and engage our volunteer base, including film screenings, educational webinars, etc.

Administration/Other

  • Help with various office activities, such as filing, data entry, mailings, as necessary.

Desired Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this internship is a current student or recent graduate with dedication to reproductive rights and an interest in learning about the operations of a non-profit advocacy organization.

  • Support and enthusiasm for NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia's mission to defend and expand the full range of reproductive rights and health care options for women, including abortion, birth control, sex education, bearing healthy children, and adoption. Knowledge of current reproductive rights issues and experience with pro-choice or reproductive justice activism is preferred.
  • Strong writer, researcher and editor familiar with Microsoft Office and social media applications. Experience with website/blog management, desktop publishing, image editing, or other computer skills are a plus.
  • Familiarity with progressive online activism, blogging and social media practices.
  • Activist, political, and/or non-profit experience. (Experience with non-profit or political communications is a plus.)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in cooperative decision-making settings.

Internship details/requirements: The ideal candidate will be available 20-32 hours/week for a period of at least 8-10 weeks during the summer of 2017 (May-August). The majority of internship activities will take place in our office located in Old Town Alexandria (Metrorail and Metrobus accessible) during office hours (9am-5pm, Mon-Fri), as well as off-site evening and weekend work at local community events in Arlington and Alexandria. (Access to a car for transportation for these off-site events is preferred.)

 

Compensation: A stipend will be provided and/or we will work with students on receiving academic credit if applicable. Stipend amount will depend on numbers of hours/weeks available to work.
