About The Atlas Project
The Atlas Project provides an interactive platform that hosts political research and data that helps the progressive community make smart, effective, and cost-efficient decisions when planning electoral and issue advocacy campaigns. We rely on a team of political and data analysts who have a proven track record of developing customized, actionable research to help meet our clients' needs.
Founded in 2004 by Mary Beth Cahill, Steve Rosenthal and Michael Whouley, the Atlas Project's mission is to arm campaigns and progressive organizations with the insight, analysis and tools to help avoid costly missteps and make better strategic decisions, in addition to serving as the institutional memory for progressives.
Director of Data & Technology
The Director is the leader of the Atlas Project's Data & Technology Department and reports to the Executive Director. The Data & Technology Department designs, builds, and maintains the Atlas Project's Online Toolkit. The ideal candidate for this position is someone with experience managing people in a tech environment. This person should be equally motivated by project management as they are motivated to write code. When there are multiple projects to juggle, the ideal candidate should be able to step in as lead developer. The candidate should also have experience working with all components that make up the Atlas Project's web infrastructure. This includes working with AWS cloud servers, MySQL databases, WordPress, and Python for data extract, transform and load processes.
Duties include:
- Planning and executing improvements to the Atlas Project's Online Toolkit
- Leading a team of awesome and brilliant people that are motivated by improving their skills
- Coordinating with the Atlas Project's information technology consultant to assess and improve office technology needs
- Planning and executing data collection efforts during major campaigns and after major elections – election results, voter registration statistics, ballot measures, etc.
- Writing clean, neat and well documented code
- Reviewing code before it reaches production and providing substantive feedback to developers
- Maintaining and managing data vendor relationships
· Assess departmental expenditures and make budgetary recommendations
· Perform weekly assessments of client and toolkit activity including security reviews
- Mentoring department fellows as they begin amazing careers in progressive technology
Qualifications:
- Experience with PHP (WordPress), Python, SQL (MySQL), HTML, JavaScript, CSS
· Experience with designing databases and data structures (MySQL)
· Command line experience (Ubuntu, Red Hat Linux) and experience SSH'ing into remote servers
· Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively
· Possess strong attention details
· Proven track record in problem solving, both technical and managerial
· Effectively communicate in non-technical terms technical projects
· Must be innovative and excited about building tools that help the progressive movement
· A work history in labor, community organizing, political campaigns or progressive technology firms
