ABOUT US

Students for Education Reform Action Network (SFER AN) is a community organizing nonprofit that develops college students into grassroots organizers who fight for educational justice in their communities.

 

Beginning in 2009, as a club to foster campus conversations around the achievement gap and promising solutions at Princeton University, SFER grew into a national nonprofit that focused on supporting students who are accelerating education reform through community organizing in their local districts and states. Since 2009, when our first chapter launched, our movement has grown from 40 students on one campus to over 1,500 students across 90 campuses across 24 states.

 

WHY WORK FOR SFER AN?

We have the audacity to believe that students have the power to demand functioning public schools in their communities. We also have the humility to know that only local, sustainable; grassroots change will create a public education system worthy of our youth. We work with urgency, passion, and lots of joy.

 

The Students for Education Reform Action Network (SFER AN)'s summer fellowship is a 12-week program for college students to directly engage in grassroots advocacy by supporting student endorsed candidates and building community power through on the ground organizing.

We seek talented field directors to manage one of multiple fellowship sites this summer. Candidates must be skilled trainers, coaches, and mentors and be excited to train and develop Fellows into community leaders.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Field Director manages all aspects of the program in a given site, including directing a robust voter contact program, delivering ongoing organizer training and managing fellows. They are culture warriors who ensure a positive experience for all Fellows and train them to become well-rounded organizers able to deliver strong voter outreach and campaign strategy.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

·      Recruiting and hiring fellows from local college campuses in line with the support of the local Program Manager

·      Work with the SFER AN National Field Specialist and local strategists to design and implement a robust voter outreach program and effectively execute the associated managerial tasks (setting goals, analyzing data, managing staff, conducting nightly reports, delivering progress to goal narrative to Fellows, etc.) and supporting Organizing Fellows to take ownership of these tasks over time.

·      Delivering professional development sessions that consistent of community organizing and canvassing training program and managing fellows to goal.

·      Partner with SFER AN National staff to provide meaningful projects and experiences for Organizing Fellows.

·      Supervision of Organizing Fellows, including managing culture, motivation and various HR needs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must believe in the vision and principles of SFER AN and be driven by our mission of achieving educational equity for every child, regardless of race or background. A successful candidate will demonstrate passion and skills for playing a mission-critical support role in a national grassroots movement.

 

·      Bachelor's degree required

·      Passion and talent for community organizing and social justice work; outstanding motivational and relationship-building skills Teaching or training experience required.

·      Three cycles of electoral and/or issue organizing experience preferred, some organizing experience required

·      Access to a car and a valid driver's license

·      Working knowledge of voter databases required

·      Experience in an education policy or other issue advocacy environment a plus

·      Ability to manage field office and gradually coach Organizing Fellows how to take ownership of their own field office

·      Self-motivation and willingness to work long hours.

·      Ability to successfully communicate with diverse communities and leaders.

·      Strong interpersonal skills, experience meeting deadlines, and multitasking ability.

 

COMPENSATION

Salary for this position is competitive and depends on prior experience.
