[jobsthatareLEFT] Budget Monitor, The Public Interest Network

Budget Monitor: The Public Interest Network

The Public Interest Network is hiring a Budget Monitor to work with dozens of social change organizations to trim costs, manage and maintain equipment and vendor relationships and assist in preparing and monitoring their budgets.  Successful candidates will be detail oriented, have experience in project management, strong problem solving skills, and have one year of administrative experience working in a campaign environment. This position is based in Denver, CO or Chicago, IL.

Mission and Background:

For more than 40 years, organizations in The Public Interest Network have been taking on powerful interests on behalf of the American public, working to win concrete results for our health and well-being. Together our organizations have helped pass and enact hundreds of laws and policies to protect our environment, protect consumers and hold corporations and government accountable to the public.  At the same time, we've built a thriving network with hundreds of professional staff and a presence in 35 states.

At the heart of our network and our ability to maintain our organization for four decades is a commitment to a model for building organizations and organizing for change—one that emphasizes building stable, powerful organizations, efficiency, and accountability to the goals and plans we set out to achieve.

Key Responsibilities:

The Budget Department works with all of the organizations in our network to ensure we continue to employ that model for success.  We ensure the financial health of our organizations, help to set the plans for future growth and ensure that our network as a whole is on track to hit our goals. We also work to cut costs through national contracts and effective management of valuable resources including computers.

·       Network Plan Monitoring: The budget monitor collects and reviews network spending and income throughout the year to ensure the network is implementing our plans.  This includes knowing the bottom line for each of our organizations, overall trends throughout the network and where we can re-allocate resources to overall affect more change.

·       Plan Implementation: Where groups or our network as a whole are off course, the monitor identifies, proposes and works with staff to implement solutions.  The monitor also analyzes and recommends any changes to our plans throughout the course of the year.

·       Network-wide cost cutting: The monitor identifies opportunities for cost savings across the networks and implements those strategies.  This includes working with vendors and negotiating contracts as well as tracking and allocating resources amongst our organizations.

·       Budget Planning: The monitor provides a reality check on our long-term goal setting and planning, identifying where they are overly ambitious or conservative and what resources are likely to be needed for campaigns and projects.

Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation for this position is commensurate with the relevant professional experience and/or advanced degrees that a candidate has.  The Public Interest Network offers a competitive benefits package.

Qualifications:

Candidates should thrive under pressure, be detail-oriented, have strong problem solving skills and the maturity to manage confidential and sensitive information.  The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of relevant administrative experience, preferably in an activist, campaign or non-profit environment.  Candidates must be comfortable working with Windows, Excel and large databases. A minimum two-year commitment is required.

The Public Interest Network is an equal opportunity employer and will not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, sex, age, disability, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, or veteran status.
