DESCRIPTION

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire (ACLU-NH) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to preserving the individual rights and liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. The ACLU of NH engages in litigation, legislative advocacy, grassroots organizing, and education campaigns. We are presently seeking a Community Organizer to join our community organizing and outreach team. This is a new position and will last for one year from date of hire, with possible continuation beyond one year depending on the needs of ACLU-NH. 


POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Organizer will work with the Outreach and Communication Coordinator in implementing a community outreach strategy to build scalable public education and advocacy programs, while incorporating organizing, coalition-building, leadership development, communication, and lobbying tactics. The Community Organizer will ensure ACLU-NH staff and supporters have the tools, information, and opportunities to be effective advocates. They will report to our Communications and Outreach Coordinator.


The Community Organizer will execute new volunteer initiatives for ACLU-NH and support existing programs, focusing on the ACLU's Out for Freedom Campaign (OFF) and Freedom NH (FNH) coalition work in achieving passage of a transgender non-discrimination bill in the 2018 NH State Legislative Session. Working with OFF and FNH, they will collaborate directly with and center transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people in public education and education of the media and lawmakers about who transgender people are, why gender identity discrimination is harmful, and how nondiscrimination laws provide important protections.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in organizing, public relations, community engagement, communication, and/or other related disciplines.
  • Proven experience working in advocacy for a fast-paced, multi-faceted organization.
  • Grassroots organizing or political field campaign experience.                                                                                                            
  • Proficient bilingual language skills, written and oral, a plus.
  • Track record of building relationships with a variety of stakeholders including elected officials, activists, and volunteers.
  • Ability to coordinate, lead and supervise groups of activists, staff, supporters and volunteers.
  • Capable of working across the political spectrum.
  • Experience with the strategic use of social media to promote outreach efforts. efforts.                                       
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with experience writing in a professional capacity.                                    
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.     
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Ability to balance competing deadlines and priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the ACLU's values.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as required.                                                               
  • A reliable and flexible means of transportation is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Manage relationships with ACLU-NH supporters and community groups through grassroots campaign tactics,
  • Work closely with the Freedom New Hampshire campaign to advance the gender identity nondiscrimination bill in the 2018 New Hampshire State Legislative Session.
  • Research and monitor relevant legislative, political and administrative issues at state and local levels.                      
  • Draft action alerts, social media collateral, and educational and advocacy campaign materials.                            
  • Advance and implement programs to engage, motivate, and educate activists and community supporters.            
  • Recruit, train and manage volunteers and activists.
  • Organize public events, panel discussions, community forums and related events on college and university campuses and in targeted communities.                                  
  • Mobilize ACLU-NH supporters to ensure strong event turn-out.     
  • Provide support to the Outreach and Communication Coordinator as needed.                     

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The position of Community Organizer will receive an annual salary commensurate with experience. The ACLU-NH also provides a generous benefits package.
