Overview:

Provide public engagement and communications leadership and coordination for the Plastics project in Greenpeace US. Lead a broad range of work to engage supporters including strategy, messaging/storytelling, audience research, concept, narrative and creative development. You will use tactics across all of our channels to ensure that Greenpeace supporters are at the center our campaigns, build power for Greenpeace, and advance our goals to end the flow of plastic waste into our oceans and waterways. The Engagement Specialist works in collaboration with a cross-departmental project team(s) as well as with colleagues in other national/regional offices working on plastics. This is an exciting opportunity to work with an amazing team of diverse professionals in Greenpeace US and other Greenpeace offices around the world to support one of our highest priority projects.

Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic direction and communication design - Advise the Plastics project team on the formulation and execution of Greenpeace's strategic direction and communication design. Build a cohesive narrative across multiple platforms, including visuals, traditional media, digital channels, and creative confrontation.
  2. Engagement Strategy & Implementation (US) - Lead and coordinate the formulation, agreement and implementation of an overarching pro-active supporter engagement strategy for the Plastics project in collaboration with the project team(s). Lead day-to-day implementation of the strategy and empower individual team members to rollout work in a coordinated way. Ensure alignment of messaging and creative approaches across all projects and disciplines (online, offline, fundraising, media, etc.). Take the lead in developing meaningful ways for supporters to be involved in this work.
  3. Creative/Cultural Concept Development - Proactively scan external world for opportunities to bring the issue of plastics pollution greater public awareness and engagement. This may include partnering with creative agencies, engaging celebrities and other high profile supporters, designing public events and pursuing the use of innovative technologies and online platforms.
  4. Fundraising strategy coordination - Work closely with the development team to build fundraising goals and materials into the engagement design for the project, including creating resilient concepts and visuals that work for fundraising as well as campaign strategy.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of online campaigning/organizing experience – including email writing and list building, database management and segmentation, online to on the ground organizing and online fundraising;
  • A history of creating engagement strategies that result in winning major campaign victories and raising money;
  • Proven email and online writing and editing skills with a strong attention to detail;
  • Expertise in online platforms and tools such as EveryAction, Wordpress, Facebook, Twitter, Google Analytics, etc.;
  • A deep understanding and commitment to testing and data analysis;
  • Excellent planning skills. Able to work with multiple teams, set and review goals, assess risks and outcomes, and analyze data.
  • Experience working with national and international media outlets
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Experience in working in an international environment
  • Demonstrated experience in managing cross-cultural and geographically distributed teams
  • Articulate, creative, and passionate, with excellent written and spoken English
