Founded in 1997, the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) – a small national nonprofit organization with a mission of advancing effective STD prevention programs and services in every community across the country – provides leadership, builds capacity, convenes partners, and advocates for quality STD prevention. Our members include the 65 CDC directly-funded jurisdictions tasked with carrying out the nation's STD prevention efforts – the health departments of every state, seven large cities/counties, and the U.S.-affiliated territories in the Atlantic and Pacific. Additionally, we have over 1,000 associate members across the country working in the public and private sectors to advance sexual health and STD prevention.

This is a crucial turning point for the field of STD prevention. As we are confronted with the highest rates of STDs in 20 years, we are also realizing actual and proposed cuts to STD and HIV prevention programs across the country. NCSD is committed to rising to the challenge of supporting high quality, evidence-based STD programming through program and policy technical assistance with a consistent peer-to-peer approach, communicating to members and stakeholders about the issues at hand, implementing training that supports and improves skills for engaging policy-makers and building the evidence-base, and leveraging national and federal partnerships to elevate and integrate STD programs nationally and in practice at the local level.

Appointed in October of 2016, a new executive director is focused on expanding the organization's reach to meet the challenge. A new website and logo will be released in August along with other new communications tools. The Director of Communications – a newly formed position within the organization -- will be an integral part of meeting the challenge and implementing new communications strategies and activities.

POSITION

The Director of Communications will lead the organization's overall communications strategy and activities. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications will work collaboratively with the senior team to develop and implement a communications plan to broaden the impact of NCSD's program, public policy and legislative advocacy work. As a new position with NCSD, the Director of Communications will have the responsibility of implementing new communications initiatives, tools and formats, and will play a major role in helping the organization speak with one voice in a compelling and persuasive style – helping NCSD meet an overall strategic goal of shifting the national narrative about STDs to one of urgency for policy-makers, the public and the larger public health field.
