COMMUNICATIONS and Outreach Specialist
SUMMARY:
The Communications and Outreach Specialist acts as the Member's media and press advisor. This position requires the ability to work independently. The Communications and Outreach Specialist manages all aspects of the Press Operations, Social Media and Website presence
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate all press activities;
- Maintain liaison with press corps in the District;
- Screen and respond to daily inquiries from press;
- Plan and coordinate media coverage;
- Record and capture all TV appearances and relevant events within the District;
- Develop and oversee preparation of press releases, columns, newsletters, and use of new media;
- Manage the Member's website and Social Media Accounts, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram;
- Prepare formal speeches, Op-Eds, and talking points for the Member;
- Disseminate statements, releases, speeches, and articles involving the Member;
- Review of daily newspapers;
- Maintain Google Alerts on the Member and the office and staff;
- Establish and maintain a permanent electronic scrapbook for historical archiving of press generated materials;
- Maintain and update the Member's media contact/mailing list;
- Screen, respond to, and/or refer to appropriate staff, inquiries from press;
- Coordinate press conferences (staffing, announcing, recording, disseminating information);
- Keep abreast of media-relevant issues and inform staff and relevant individuals of scheduled appearances by the Member.
· Works cooperatively with the Constituent Services staff in the coordination of event in the District or community outreach meetings;
· Maintains a database of businesses, community and neighborhood leaders throughout the District;
· Maintains a calendar of events in the District, where appropriate, and shares this information with appropriate staff members
· Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Political Science or related field;
- Demonstrated working knowledge of District government and new media;
- Minimum of 2 years communication leadership,
- Works well under pressure, handles stress effectively.
