POSITION AVAILABLE: Youth Organizer – Position located in Illinois; Contract, Term

 

REPORTS TO: Lead Organizer

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Common Cause Illinois is seeking an accomplished, strategic, and collaborative organizer to contract with our office and assist in our efforts to build a stronger, more diverse base throughout the state that will build on our victories and ensure that we are furthering the cause of justice by holding power accountable.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Collaborate with the Lead Organizer and other staff to develop, strengthen, and maintain a grassroots organizing network across the state. Recruit and develop diverse leadership of grassroots members, especially youth and people living in low-income communities and communities of color. Support Common Cause Illinois' action teams and campus chapters. Identify new high schools, trade schools, community colleges, and universities where Common Cause chapters could be started, and work with students and administrators to grow capacity on campus. Build coalition support, organize members, and educate the public and elected officials on democracy issues, including voting rights and money in politics. Coordinate in-person events at the speed of the news cycle that may include petition deliveries, stand-up news conferences, and other creative actions that earn media attention. Stay abreast of legislative and organizational developments throughout the state, building and maintaining relationships with key elected officials. Develop and write public outreach materials including fact sheets, action alerts, presentations, and online updates. Assist with fundraising for our organizing campaigns in coordination with the Director of Development and Strategic Growth. This position is based in Chicago but will require travel throughout the state.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree preferred. We will, however, consider experience in lieu of a degree. Understanding of the role community organizing and power has in moving democracy issues. Commitment to political reform and social and economic justice. Strong empathy, ability, and desire to work in diverse settings. Ability to multi-task and to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.Willingness to work flexible hours—including occasional weeknights and weekends. Ability to travel overnight in Illinois. Commitment to working as part of a team. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, G Suite, and current social media platforms required. Luminate (or similar website and advocacy management program) mastery is a plus. Fluent in multiple languages a plus
