Position: Staff Attorney - Economic Justice & Immigrants and Communities Programs

Position Summary

The Staff Attorney will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and developing legal and policy solutions to improve the lives of the working poor, protect workers rights, and improve job quality, wages, and benefits. The Staff Attorney will assist in municipal and state-level legislative advocacy. The position will work closely with staff attorneys and community organizers in the Economic Justice Program and Immigrants & Communities Program, as well as the Policy Director and Legal Director. The position will also work in close partnership with Nebraskans for Civic Reform and the South of Downtown Community Development Organization. This is a full-time position based in our office in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with community members and community partners to identify issues, and potential systemic legal and policy solutions to issues raised by the community.

  • Identify best-practice policy solutions adopted in other states and cities addressing poverty, workers rights, and quality jobs and wages, and research their applicability in Lincoln and Nebraska.

  • Conduct legal research and analysis focused on the legal aspects of key issues affecting working poor Lincolnites and Nebraskans, as well as draft and provide testimony to state and local legislative bodies and administrative agencies.

  • Work with the Legal Director and other staff attorneys to develop and conduct impact or class action litigation to remedy problems.

  • Develop educational materials (e.g., reports, fact sheets, presentations, policy briefs) for key stakeholders.

  • Supervise law clerks, and advise intake coordinator and community organizers on intakes relating to workers rights issues.

  • Participate, as needed, in administrative tasks and program teams.

 

Qualifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in Nebraska or willing to take necessary steps to be licensed.*

  • Excellent legal research, analytic, and writing skills.*

  • Creative and strategic thinking. The ability to develop novel legal theories and strategies to address complex problems, and keep the big picture in mind.*

  • Ability to work independently, be organized and detail-oriented.*

  • Ability to work in a team-oriented and collaborative environment.*

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively build and maintain community relationships.*

  • Experience in or demonstrated commitment to public interest law and advocacy on behalf of workers and working poor Nebraskans.*

  • Knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues facing worker rights.

  • Exceptional recent graduates will be considered as well as more experienced attorneys.

  • Legal experience in litigation and the areas of local government law and employment law, administrative law, civil rights, and/or appellate practice preferred.

  • Experience with legislative and administrative advocacy preferred.

  • Spanish language fluency (speaking, reading and writing) preferred.
