JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Opportunity for a Researcher Committed to an Equitable and Just Education System

Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) | October 2017

Organization Description:

Founded in 1993, Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) is recognized as a national leader in the effort to address the challenges of working poverty, inadequate health care and polluted communities. Combining a vision of social justice with a practical approach to social change, LAANE has helped set in motion a broad movement to transform conditions in Los Angeles and beyond.

Project Description:

LAANE seeks a full-time researcher for our education campaign. LAANE is an anchor organization for Reclaim Our Schools Los Angeles, a coalition of students, parents, educators, school staff, and community members working to improve access and advance opportunities in public education for all students so they thrive in the classroom and in their communities. Reclaim Our Schools LA leads an initiative to expand Community Schooling within LAUSD to transform schools into strong neighborhood hubs with enriching and relevant curriculum; health, mental health and other wrap-around services; restorative justice programs; and parent and community engagement.  Reclaim Our Schools LA also leads campaigns like the Schools LA Students Deserve, which fights for the funding, accountability and support that our students, educators and school staff need.

Responsibilities

LAANE's Research Department conducts research and produces publications that directly advance public policy campaigns. Researchers conduct various types of research, including research on laws and public decision-making processes to inform policy development and campaign strategy, research on the economy and communities using government and other public data sources, analysis of data sets, and original surveys. Researchers present their findings through written materials and oral presentations at community meetings and government hearings, meetings, and venues. Researchers also represent LAANE at meetings with allies and support the work of the organization as a whole.

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the labor movement, communities of color, and social and economic justice. Demonstrated interest in racial justice, civil rights and immigrant rights is a plus. Applicants must have a graduate degree in public policy (or a related field) or have relevant experience.
