Voting Rights and Democracy Program Campaign Manager

Position Location: Washington DC, Minnesota or NYC, strong candidates from other locations may be considered. Candidates must be available to travel extensively.

 

The Center for Popular Democracy is seeking a Campaign Manager to help support, develop, run and win local and statewide voting rights and democracy campaigns on a range of issues, including restoration of rights, automatic voter registration, public financing, redistricting and other innovative democracy reforms.

 

The Campaign Manager will work closely with CPD's Voting Rights and Democracy team, CPD's state affiliates across the across the country, as well as other allied state and national organizations to support and implement strategic issue campaigns.

About the Position

We are looking for an energetic, creative and driven issue organizer to develop, support and implement state and local policy campaigns advancing proactive voting rights, money in politics and democracy reforms around the country. Candidates should have experience developing and running ambitious state and local issue advocacy campaigns and at least 7-10 years of experience working with state-based coalitions, campaigns, or base-building community organizations to run state-level issue campaigns.

Candidates must be passionate about expanding access to democracy and increasing political participation and a background working on voting rights, democracy and civil rights issues is preferred. This position is an exciting opportunity to lead CPD's voting rights and democracy campaign work in strategically important states across the country.

Primary Responsibilities

The Voting Rights and Democracy Campaign Manager will report to the Director of Voting Rights and Democracy.

The Campaign Manager will:

·       Serve as the primary contact for CPD's active state and municipal voting rights and democracy campaigns and implementation efforts;

·       Coordinate CPD's work with state affiliates on a range of state and local money in politics and AVR campaigns;

·       Provide strategic and technical campaign assistance including field, communications, policy and legislative strategy to meet the campaign goals and priorities of active democracy campaigns;

·       Educate and train state affiliates and their members about money in politics and policy solutions;

·       Support campaigns by attending campaign coalition meetings/calls and when necessary, embed with partners or relevant coalitions during critical periods of targeted campaigns;

·       Work to build and enhance the leadership and capacity of our state affiliates to engage and lead state policy campaigns to pass, implement and protect small-dollar public financing and voting rights reforms; 

·       Work with targeted state affiliates to expand the participation and leadership of communities of color and low-income communities in state and local advocacy efforts to advance proactive democracy reforms;  

·       Help build tools to use across state campaigns including campaign tools, training, communication/messaging materials and evaluations to use across state campaigns;

·       Serve as field lead with other national democracy organizations on state campaign related work;

·       Help the Director with assessment & planning for prospective/potential future campaigns;

·       Work with the Director to support planning and campaign development participate in developing national strategy to advance a multi-issue proactive democracy reform agenda that includes advancing money in politics and voting rights reforms in key states and localities;

·       Coordinate with CPD campaign and policy staff in other issue areas to find opportunities for aligned work and cross-campaign coordination.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with excellent relationship-building skills, who are outcome driven, with strong and diverse project management skills. Ideal candidates should have demonstrated experience in the following:

·       A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;

·       Minimum of 7 years of strategic state-level issue advocacy experience including developing statewide legislative issue campaigns or ballot initiatives;

·       Significant experience building and sustaining diverse coalitions to advocate for policy change;

·       Experience writing and implementing state-level issue campaign plans that include lobbying, grassroots mobilization, field, communications and policy implementation strategies;

·       A background working on voting rights and/or money in politics is strongly preferred;

·       Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a broad and diverse set of state partners, allies and others;

·       Ability to juggle multiple projects at a time and work in a fast-paced work environment;

·       Independent and strong organizer that is able to drive project and programs to completion;

·       Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations; and

·       Excellent writing and communication skills.

The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days per year, 10 sick days per year, 12 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals' 401K plans.
