A progressive Democrat running for office in Central Brooklyn is seeking two interns to play integral roles in the campaign between February and November 2018. This is a grassroots campaign fueled primarily by progressive volunteers committed to making positive change in Brooklyn. Issues central to the campaign include affordable housing, immigration reform, education, women's health, criminal justice reform, and environmental justice. This internship is an excellent opportunity for a student or recent graduate to give back to their community and gain meaningful communication, fundraising, and community organizing experience.
Candidates must be willing to commit 10-15+ hours a week for a minimum of three months. Some duties may be performed remotely, but must live in or be willing to travel to Brooklyn regularly. Interns will report to the campaign manager. This is an unpaid opportunity.
Responsibilities may include:
Communications:
Draft written correspondence on behalf of the campaign including social media posts, press releases, email blasts, collateral copy
Work with graphic designer and printer on production of campaign materials
Community organizing:
Manage volunteer teams
Organize and participate in canvassing and petitioning
Organize and participate in phone banking
Events:
Preparing and staffing candidate at political, community and campaign events
Assist in organizing campaign events including fundraisers, press conferences, meet and greets, and debates
Attend political and community events on behalf of the candidate
Research:
Prepare issue specific research briefs for candidate
Requirements:
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Strong research skills
A self-starter who can work autonomously on projects from start to finish
Passion for local politics and progressive causes
Eagerness to learn about campaign management and fundraising
Previous volunteer campaign experience a plus
Political science or communications major a plus
