Legislative Assistant Job Description
New York City Council Member Rory Lancman is recruiting applicants for the position of Legislative Assistant.
Responsibilities will include:
- Assisting the Legislative Director with policy research and special projects
- Managing the progress of bill drafting requests.
- Meeting with advocates and stakeholders and keeping them informed about issues of importance to them
- Drafting constituent letters about policy issues.- Staffing the Council Member at relevant legislative and budget meetings.
- Tracking legislation and other developments in assigned issue areas and briefing the Council Member before committee hearings, meetings, and events.
The Legislative Assistant will be based in Manhattan but will be expected to occasionally travel to Fresh Meadows, Queens.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have strong research and writing skills with the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment. The applicant should be highly organized and thorough and be prepared to assist with a wide-ranging legislative portfolio. The applicant should be willing to work a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends.
Some New York City or State policy experience is beneficial, but exceptional candidates without such experience will be given strong consideration.
Pay is commensurate with experience.
