DEPUTY POLITICAL DIRECTOR


The Michigan House Democratic Fund is seeking a thoughtful, driven, results-oriented, full-time Deputy Political Director to join a team of passionate people, working dutifully to achieve our mission to give every family, every small business, and every Michigander a path to lasting prosperity by electing Democrats as State Representatives.


ROLE OVERVIEW

The Deputy Political Director, who reports to the statewide Campaigns Director, will oversee the implementation of a statewide campaign plan in one of four regions. She or he will work one-on-one with State Representative candidates and staff to be a more effective campaign. The ideal Deputy Political Director will be be high energy, outgoing, enthusiastic, and willing to work long hours. One must also be be a strong communicator, relationship builder, and coach.


This position is also an opportunity to engage with policy makers, key Democratic leaders throughout the designated region, future candidates for office, and consultants to bring about positive change for the state of Michigan.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Deputy Political Director, who is based in Lansing and reports to the Campaigns Director, is responsible for the following:

  • Recruiting and securing driven, self-motivated State Representative candidates in each of the districts in their assigned region.

  • Be the primary point of contact on behalf of the Michigan House Democrats for each campaign in your region.

  • Lead regular "State of the Race" campaign meetings with candidates and staff.

  • Provide regular reports to the Campaigns Director on each of your assigned races.

  • Frequent travel to districts for in-person candidate trainings, 1:1 campaign meetings, and additional campaign duties as deemed necessary by the Campaigns Director.

  • Work with the Communications, Finance, Data, and Organizing directors - under the oversight of the Campaigns Director - to develop and execute campaign plans for State Rep. candidates.

  • Work with an assigned, regional Communications Writer to share campaign messaging and deliver press releases, media advisories, and other written materials as needed.

  • With the direction of the Campaigns Director, engage with other Congressional and State Senate campaign staff, as well as the Michigan Democratic party staff, to ensure consistent alignment with our House Democratic campaign.

  • Provide strategic guidance when necessary to the Campaigns Director, Democratic Leader, Caucus members and Chief of Staff.


QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking candidates who excel in problem solving and proactively identifying opportunities for improving our work product, have the ability to think strategically and experience directly coaching others to be a more effective candidate. You should have:

  • A proven track record of consistently meeting established deadlines and uses time effectively while managing multiple, simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • The ideal candidate is passionate about movement building by embracing all people, traditions, and state culture.

  • Candidates who have at least one cycle of campaign management experience at any level are prefered.

  • The ability to be an excellent team player and collaborator.

  • Excellent writing skills and a high attention to detail.

  • Willingness to jump in without hesitation to any task - big or small.

  • An ongoing interest in continued learning and adaptation based on best practices.

  • Ability to travel frequently, including access to a vehicle and access to a cell phone.

  • Votebuilder (VAN), Google Docs, Dropbox, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Office/Excel experience.
