Tobacco campaign director

The take-away

Ready to take on some of the most powerful forces in our society? We're looking for a tobacco campaign director to join our fierce, smart team in challenging global corporations, holding them accountable, and creating a world where all people can thrive.

Why you'll love coming to work every day
You'll help change the world. We're not kidding. You'll be joining a team that's not satisfied with the world as it is -- and has a vision for how it should be. Add a 40-year track record of winning campaigns and ambitious plans to win even bigger, and you've got a powerful force to be reckoned with.

You'll work with awesome people. Join a team of seasoned, kind, determined, optimistic, and solutions-oriented folks. We work hard, celebrate victories large and small, and always have each other's backs.

You'll be a part of fearless and winning campaigns. When you're in the business of ending corporate abuses, you can't be afraid to name names and stand your ground. For 40 years, we've been exposing and challenging the abuses of the likes of Nestlé, Exxon Mobil, Philip Morris International, McDonald's, Dow Chemical, and more. We don't back down, and we run campaigns until we win.

You will take on big responsibilities as you go. You'll thrive here when you actively take on more as you learn and grow. We pay lots of attention to building staff leadership, and we provide support and training to help you be the best you can be.

You'll be part of an organization committed to advancing racial equity and transforming systems of oppression. We are deeply committed to prioritizing the leadership of those who bear the brunt of corporate abuse: women, people of color, low-income people, people in the Global South, and LGBTQ folks around the world. Our unique culture has been fostered by a long history of women at the helm. We know we are stronger when the organization reflects the vision of the world we're building together.

What you'll do

Today, Big Tobacco still produces and markets the only legal product that kills up to half its users when used exactly as intended. That product claims more than seven million lives a year. If that weren't enough, for decades, Big Tobacco has written the playbook on corporate abuse that a host of other industries, from Big Polluters to Big Food, has adopted. But in the more than two decades since our tobacco campaign launched, we've shifted the landscape tremendously for the tobacco industry: The global movement challenging Big Tobacco is vast and powerful, and the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), also known as the global tobacco treaty, is already proving a critical tool for reining in the industry. That's why Corporate Accountability is looking for a strategic, seasoned organizer to take the helm of this campaign -- and take it to the next level.

You'll be part of our smart, dynamic crew that advances groundbreaking policies around the world to hold Big Tobacco accountable for its abuses --  and set precedents for other abusive industries, too. Your job will be to organize activists, experts, policymakers, and more to tackle Big Tobacco head-on and advance the strongest corporate accountability measures of the global tobacco treaty. You'll do so in partnership with our powerhouse team of organizers, researchers, and policy experts around the world. And you'll draw on, build, and strengthen our existing network of organizations and allies from all corners of the globe.

To do so, you'll use all the tools at your disposal: You'll produce advocacy materials and take them to international treaty meetings, where you'll lead our team collaborating with ministers of health and advocates from around the globe to advance groundbreaking policy. You'll work with our media team to expose Big Tobacco's deadly deeds -- and partner with our digital folks and our grassroots membership to make sure the world knows. You'll go toe-to-toe with the CEO of Philip Morris International at its annual shareholders' meetings. You'll support our allies in organizing grassroots actions that build the movement. And you'll do it all with Corporate Accountability's 40-year track record and hundreds of thousands of member and supporters at your back -- and the fire in your belly to create a world where corporations answer to people, not the other way around.

Who you are

The rampant abuses of corporations and the outrageous amount of power they have make you mad as hell -- and you want to do something about it.

You've got an organizer's heart and a strategic brain. Whether it's putting on a suit to attend global treaty meetings in Geneva, joining a Skype call to strategize with an ally halfway around the world, or leading a protest with dozens of youth outside a tobacco corporation's annual shareholders' meeting, you're ready to do what it takes to win big.

You understand that changing the imbalance of power in the world, its inherent racial injustice, and the oppression people of color experience is a critical part of your work for justice. You have experience advancing racial equity and working to transform systems of oppression.

You're a skilled communicator: Whether you're writing policy briefs for U.N. government delegates, pitching a journalist to cover your next big event, or holding a one-on-one planning meeting with a coalition partner, you build strong relationships, bring others along with you, and move them to action.

You thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure, high-volume environment. You're nimble and strategic: You can shift gears on a moment's notice. And you approach challenges as opportunities to bring forward innovative solutions.

You have 5 – 7 years of experience working as an organizer in a campaign environment, preferably in an international setting, and ideally directing corporate campaigns.

You can communicate in Spanish with ease. You have experience working in Spanish, and are excited to do so with our team in Latin America and allies around the globe.

What you'll be responsible for in the day-to-day

Play a lead role in developing and implementing Corporate Accountability's tobacco campaign plans, in close collaboration with our research, media, and digital teams.

Organize a wide range of people, from coalition partners to policy experts to U.N. delegates to grassroots activists, to advance precedent-setting international and national policies to rein in Big Tobacco's abuses.

Collaborate with our Latin America team to monitor, expose, and challenge the tobacco industry's tactics throughout the region.

Coordinate with and mobilize the Network for Accountability of Tobacco Transnationals, our long-established international network of corporate campaign organizations, to advance implementation of the global tobacco treaty.

Publicly represent Corporate Accountability at conferences, U.N. gatherings, corporate shareholders' meetings, and in the media -- and travel internationally up to six times a year to do so.

Conduct policy analysis and development, and create advocacy materials to educate and organize people to support our campaigns and lifesaving international policies.

Conduct monitoring, research, and analysis of tobacco industry activities and trends; adapt campaign strategies and tactics accordingly.

Organize international, national, regional, and local actions and events to build the grassroots muscle behind our tobacco campaign and the global movement to hold Big Tobacco accountable.

Enthusiastically participate in organization-wide planning, fundraising, recruitment, and campaign activities.

Salary and benefits:

Your salary will be commensurate with experience.

Our generous benefit package includes health insurance and dental coverage; FSA for transit, healthcare, and dependent care; and 401(k) with employer match.

Generous vacation, sick time, and holiday policies.

Both internal and external training and leadership development opportunities.

Energetic Campaign Headquarters complete with open, collaborative work spaces and a big social kitchen.

Location: Campaign Headquarters in downtown Boston, MA.
