[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] JOB: Field Organizer (Washington, D.C.)

The American Civil Liberties Union of the District of Columbia (ACLU-DC) seeks a Field Organizer to design and conduct sustained organizing campaigns to build civic engagement and social power with over 20,000 ACLU-DC members and non-member supporters across all eight wards, focusing on issues related to criminal justice, racial justice, LGBTQ equality, digital privacy, religious freedom, immigrant rights, federal workers' rights, and reproductive rights.

The ACLU-DC is a non-partisan, non-profit public interest organization devoted to protecting civil rights and civil liberties. The ACLU-DC is an affiliate of the national ACLU, the leading defender of civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. We work in the courts, legislature, and in communities to defend and expand individual rights and personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and civil rights laws.

Under the direction and supervision of the Policy Director, the Field Organizer will be primarily responsible for leading and sustaining the organizing and community outreach efforts of the ACLU-DC to achieve strategic organizational objectives. This includes mobilizing ACLU-DC members and other community stakeholders around policy issues and leading the ACLU-DC's public education efforts.  In carrying out this work, the Field Organizer will also work closely with the organization's Communications and Legal departments, coalition partners, and the ACLU National Office.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Strategic organizing around ACLU campaigns:

  • Mobilize and expand support for civil liberties issues/ACLU policy goals among ACLU-DC members and non-member supporters in the District through both short-term and long-term organizing efforts.
  • Develop and implement strategies for organizing District residents to work toward achieving ACLU-DC's strategic objectives, including developing campaign plans; turning goals and strategies into tactics, timelines, and metrics; facilitating discussions; and conducting follow-up to ensure that metrics are being met.
  • Help build and participate in broad-based coalitions by fostering, strengthening, and nurturing relationships with allied organizations and targeted community groups.
  • Engage in speaking opportunities to promote the ACLU-DC's work and mobilize ACLU-DC members and the broader public around specific advocacy opportunities.
  • Conduct and coordinate outreach with partners, ACLU membership, and community to ensure strong turnout at ACLU-DC events and co-sponsored events with coalition partners.
  • Track programs' progress to goals, produce reports and highlights and adjust plans as necessary.

Rights Education:

  • In collaboration with the Policy, Legal, and Communications departments, help develop persuasive and informative outreach materials, including fact sheets, talking points, and "know-your-rights" materials.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate "Know Your Rights" trainings in the community on various ACLU civil rights and civil liberties issues.
  • Maintain a bank of ACLU rights materials and training guidelines that are accessible by staff.
  • Devise and implement trainings for ACLU-DC staff, members, and non-members supporters on community outreach and engagement, meeting with elected officials, volunteer-led outreach like phone-banking and canvassing, data management, interacting with media, and using social media and technology to take online activism offline.

Qualifications

The Field Organizer should possess the following experience and personal attributes:

  • Personally committed to advancing the ACLU's values, mission, goals and programs, with an understanding of the range of civil rights and civil liberties issues and their implications, particularly as they relate to criminal justice reform
