SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
Common Cause is one of the most active, effective, and respected nonprofit organizations working for political change in America. We are a nonpartisan citizen's lobby, dedicated to making government responsive and accountable to the people. Since the 1970s, we have led the fight for campaign finance reforms, ethics and accountability in government, civil rights, and open government on national, state and local levels.  Our New York Chapter is among the most active state chapters.

The Campaign & Organizing Manager will be responsible for managing the statewide Let NY Vote Coalition and its voting rights campaigns, designing and implementing  programs to mobilize young voters in districts throughout the state, and for educating and engaging Common Cause/NY members, coalition partners and other activists on our reform issues and projects, including the impact of special interest influence and campaign dollars on policy at the city and state level and working for effective, transparent and equitable government.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage the Let NY Vote campaign and coalition:

·      Campaign Manager for Let NY Vote, a statewide coalition of grassroots groups, unions, and organizations working together to modernize NY's voting laws.

o   Establish new and existing relationships with partner organizations representing diverse constituencies.

o   Maintain relationships with partner organizations by facilitating weekly check-in calls or meetings to ensure campaign targets are being met.

o   Work well within and deftly navigate dense Coalition dynamics.

Lead Common Cause New York organizing agenda:

Develop and execute organizing strategies to build support for the Common Cause agenda. Tactics include petition and letter-writing drives, coalition-building, press conferences, email, social networking and on-line campaigns, as well as grassroots lobbying


Activate the Common Cause/New York's 70,000+ grassroots members in local, state, and federal advocacy efforts, recruiting, training and building volunteer teams to increase advocacy and activism among supporters and staff. Communicate with volunteer leaders on a regular basis.

·     Mobilize young voters in the midterm 2018 elections through voter registration drives. Manage student interns and volunteers in support of mobilization efforts.


Create communications collateral in support of campaigns and digital organizing efforts:

·         Collaborate with Executive Director and other staff to write, edit and send digital communications (email, social, media, text, and web) that mobilize constituents throughout New York State to participate in our campaigns.

·         Develop and write public outreach materials including fact sheets, action alerts, presentations, and online updates.

·         Responsible for online organizing and digital communications, including website updates, working in collaboration with the national digital team and coalition design team.

·         Perform administrative tasks such as record and track metrics, coordinate community event and volunteer calendars, database maintenance, lobbying reports, participate in conference calls, report on metrics and goals.


QUALIFICATIONS
A large part of this job will require the deft management and navigation of coalition dynamics and politics. You're up for the interpersonal challenge, have a depth and breadth of experience balancing competing priorities of member organizations, and aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the messy work of long-term organizing. This position will require occasional evening and weekend work, travel within New York City, and ad hoc in-state travel particularly during legislative session.

Ideally, you have:

·         Successfully built coalitions in pursuit of a shared agenda to achieve concrete results and coordinated volunteers.

·         Built and cultivated relationships with people and organizations of various orientations and diverse backgrounds. 

·         Excellent interpersonal communication and public speaking skills and the ability to motivate people to act.

·         Juggled multiple priorities simultaneously and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

·         Strong organizational skills and pay meticulous attention to detail.

·         Results-oriented, dependable, and proactive.

·         Demonstrated ability for clear, concise and persuasive writing.

·         Ability to work independently, initiate projects and work with minimal supervision.

·         Familiarity with, and skill in, online advocacy and social media campaigning.

·         Creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and a good sense of humor.

 

Nice to have, but not essential:

·         Knowledge of state legislative and government processes, reform issues helpful.

·         Familiarity or experience working with VAN a plus.

·         Spanish language skills desired, but not necessary.

·         Action Network (or similar website and advocacy management program) mastery a plus.


Experience, education and technical proficiency:

·         Minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

·         At least 3-4 years experience in community organizing, advocacy and/or political campaigns.

·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and current social media platforms required.
