DEPARTMENT: State Operations
POSITION AVAILABLE: This is a temporary, part-time position (@25-29 hours/wk) that will begin in June and end in November. The hourly rate for this position is $15/hr and is based in New York.
REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Common Cause/New York
SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
Common Cause is one of the most active, effective, and respected nonprofit organizations working for political change in America. We are a nonpartisan citizen's lobby, dedicated to making government responsive and accountable to the people. Since the 1970s, we have led the fight for campaign finance reforms, ethics and accountability in government, civil rights, and open government on national, state and local levels. Our New York Chapter is among the most active state chapters.
Common Cause New York is tackling the growing issue of low voter turnout in local elections, especially among millennial voters. We have established Generation Vote, a project with the purpose of engaging and informing young voters in all five boroughs of New York City and in selected state senate districts outside New York City. Throughout the summer and fall, we will be developing voter guides, co-hosting candidate forums, phone and text-banking, and organizing voter registration drives – all in the name of empowering New York City's young voters.
Common Cause New York is looking to hire two organizers who will coordinate voter registration drives, spearhead our Generation Vote social media campaign, and manage our text-banking GOTV efforts during the upcoming elections.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizers will coordinate voter registration and tabling activities throughout the fall, spearhead our social media campaign and develop procedures for our text – banking GOTV efforts. This position will require evening and weekend work and travel within New York City.
Organize voter registration efforts
· Coordinate voter registration efforts throughout the city. Recruit and train volunteers to take part in local or citywide opportunities for outreach events which maximize access to eligible millennial voters.
· Table events and register voters at outdoor summer events or farmers markets in New York City, while coordinating a sizeable volunteer street team.
· Plan a digital organizing campaign that supports the goals of Generation Vote.
Recruit, train, and manage volunteers
· Organizers will recruit, train, and manage volunteers from our existing membership and action teams to help staff events.
· Conduct in-person and virtual trainings for volunteers in advance of voter registration and mobilization events.
Organize voter mobilization and engagement activities
· Organizers will use digital tools to identify and organize activists in key target areas to engage in registration, mobilization and GOTV activities targeting millennial voters.
QUALIFICATIONS
A large part of this job will require field work throughout the five boroughs and digital organizing to other parts of the state. You're effective at engaging diverse communities and constituents, an organized self-starter, and can manage your own time with little oversight.
Ideally, you have:
· Built and cultivated relationships with people and organizations of various orientations and diverse backgrounds.
· Excellent interpersonal communication and public speaking skills and the ability to motivate people to act.
· Juggled multiple priorities simultaneously and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
You'll thrive if you are/have…
· A demonstrated passion for engaging millennials on social justice and reform issues and an interest in intergenerational activities.
· Strong organizational skills, results-oriented, dependable, and proactive.
· Ability to work independently, initiate projects and work with minimal supervision.
· Familiarity with, and skill in, online advocacy and social media campaigning.
· Creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and a good sense of humor.
Nice to have, but not essential:
· Design skills a plus!
· Knowledge of state legislative and government processes, reform issues helpful.
· Spanish language skills desired, but not necessary.
· Action Network (or similar website and advocacy management program) mastery a plus.
Experience, education and technical proficiency:
· In college or have a Bachelor's degree.
· At least 1 year of experience in community organizing, advocacy and/or political campaigns.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and current social media platforms required.
