JOB DESCRIPTION

Director of Human Resources  (HR)

 

Mi Familia Vota is a 501(c)(4) organization and Mi Familia Vota Education Fund is a 501(c) (3).

We are national nonprofit civic engagement and advocacy organizations dedicated to empowering the Latino community.  We advocate year-round on critically important issues that affect our community in the fields of immigration, voting rights, the environment, workers' rights, education and health care.  Our mission is to build Latino political power by expanding the electorate, strengthening local infrastructures, and through year-round voter engagement.  Currently, we have operations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, and Texas.

 

The Opportunity:

 

We are looking for an experienced professional with a background in personnel management, organizational development, and understanding of advocacy. Though headquartered in Phoenix, AZ, we also have satellite offices in: CA, CO, NV, TX, and FL. Our organization core staff consists of approximately 50 full time and part time employees, (with variances during certain periods of up to an additional 250 full and part time staff). The successful candidate will be responsible for managing every aspect of their employment needs. This is a management position and will be part of the national team that reports directly to the Executive Director and as the liaison to the Executive Management Committee of the board.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

 

       Manage and expand current procedures and practices for hiring new employees and managing staff.

       Establish an orientation procedure for onboarding new hires and training them to meet the needs of the organization.

       Develop and manage ongoing employee development trainings.

       Implement strategies and policies to create a supportive work environment and increase employee retention.

       Communicate continuously with employees about compensation, benefits and other facets of their employment.

       Administer the scheduling of vacation and sick time based on employee needs and company requirements, in coordination with immediate supervisors.

       Manage human resources issues in a timely manner.

       Manage other HR department personnel (1-2 employees).

       Ensure all employees are in compliance with federal, state, and in-house regulatory requirements and procedures.

       Advise management on strategic staffing plans, compensation, benefits, training and development, and labor relations.

       Take a leadership role in developing a culture that enables employees to perform in accordance to the organization's objectives.

 

The Director of Human Resources is also expected to:

 

       Lead performance reviews for management, talent assessment, effective labor relationships, and administer employment contracts.

       Plan, design, develop and evaluate human resource-related initiatives that support organizational strategic planning goals.

       Have working knowledge of federal and state labor laws in the states the organization currently operates in (AZ, CA, CO, FL, NV, and TX).

       Direct the review, development and implementation of organizational development programs, employee orientation and training programs, benefits plans, policies and guidelines, database management procedures, Equal Opportunity Employment programs, and employee records and documentation policies.

       Prepare and distribute various reports on HR metrics to ensure needs are met.

       Ensure the organization is in compliance with federal, state and local laws and industry regulations

       Advising department managers on legal implications of HR issues related to discipline and employee grievances.

       Update board members on personnel matters and strategic planning.

 

Desired Qualifications:

 

       HR professional with a Bachelor's Degree.  Master's Degree in Business Administration or Human Resources preferred.

       At least 8-10 years of related work experience in human resources preferably in a nonprofit organization.

       3-5 years of experience as a HR Director.

       Strong understanding of the interviewing process, benefits administration, payroll and other HR functions.

       Professional of Human Resources (PHR) certification a plus.

       Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.

       Knowledge of and passion for social and economic justice and advocacy.

       A great attitude and a good sense of humor.
