Paid communication intern
Church and Society (www.umcjustice.org) is seeking a communication intern to work in our Washington, D.C., office for the remainder of the spring semester. Church and Society is the social justice public policy agency of The United Methodist Church. Its main office is located across from the Supreme Court on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Rooted in our faith, we seek to implement the statements of the denomination as contained within the Social Principles and Book of Resolutions. Our work touches on a wide variety of issues, including civil and human rights, economic justice, environmental justice, health and wholeness, peace with justice, and women and children.
What you'll learn
We hope this internship will help a student grow in their understanding of the vital role communication plays in faith-based advocacy and hone their technical communication skills in a real-life setting. By the end of the internship, interns should be able to boast on their resume that they have professional experience in
— Writing and editing for a variety of media.
— Developing communication and social media strategies.
— Database management.
— Working with the AP Style Guide.
In addition to regular tasks, the intern will develop (in conversation with the director of communication) a project that relates to the intern's interests and furthers their specific academic and vocational goals.
Requirements
Students should be legally allowed to work in the United States and currently be enrolled in an academic program relating in some way to communication. No previous experience is required, though a demonstrated interested in faith-based social justice advocacy is helpful. Working knowledge of AP Style would also be beneficial.
Compensation
We are looking for at least a 20 hour per week commitment during daytime hours (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.). We are flexible to work with student's class schedule, including exams and spring break. The intern is paid an hourly wage of $15. We are looking for someone who can work roughly March 1-May 31, 2019. The intern will report directly to and meet regularly with the director of communication. There will be opportunities to work with staff in our advocacy, organizing, and education departments as part of standard intern learning goals.
