The Climate Mobilization is hiring a communications director.
About the position
You are a highly motivated and self-directed communicator with experience writing, editing, speaking, and networking, who can drive the communication goals of a stubborn, hopeful, and brave organization focused on the climate crisis.
Your ideal use of time is doing everything you can to help avert runaway global warming by helping to initiate a economic mobilization focused on restoring a safe climate, advancing a just transition, and spending without limit to save as much life as possible from extinction, all at a scale and speed not seen since World War II.
You love to tell the truth, especially hard truths that need to be be told.
Experience in climate change communications and knowledge of the climate crisis will be an advantage but are not be required for the right candidate. Multimedia experience is a major plus.
Job Responsibilities
Coordinate press outreach
- Manage 5-10 dedicated volunteers in their work on social media and comms support;
- Develop and cultivate relationships with journalists and influencers in the climate and energy space;
- Produce webinars and trainings in collaboration with team leaders;
- Ensure that organizational "wins" are covered in media and disseminated among our network;
- Write and send out press releases, pitching to reporters, offering exclusives, etc.;
- Conduct pre-interviews with journalists, prepare talking points for other Climate Mobilization spokespeople.
- Become a spokesperson for Climate Mobilization and help develop the team's communication skills
Speak on behalf of the organization to journalists and influencers;
- Develop and organize key talking points for team members;
- Continue to develop the messaging guide and oversee its implementation across the org to help keep us all on message;
- Conduct media training for Climate Mobilization team (staff and volunteers).
- Create original content that promotes Climate Mobilization's concepts and work
Develop and execute a social media and content strategy;
- Promote our key documents;
- Write press releases, articles, and email blasts promoting our impact;
- Co-write and edit writing from other team members, help them hone their writing skills;
- Write, direct, and generally oversee video content, including explanations of complex topics;
- Conduct or oversee interviews with experts;
- Help to develop and coordinate events, including fundraising events.
Internal Communications
- Organize meetings and webinars for team discussions and trainings involving comms;
- Be the keeper of the style guide, enforcer of all things visual- and grammar-related;
- Identify areas of improvement needed for internal communications, including systems, processes, and culture;
- Engage in overall Climate Mobilization strategy, planning, and management
Become a leading voice inside the organization on strategy and tactics;
- Streamline processes that involve communications;
- Take responsibility for organizational success;
- Collaborate deeply in an environment where good ideas win and passion is cultivated.
