Chief Financial Officer (CFO)


Position Summary

Thunder Valley CDC CFO will provide leadership, direction, and management of the organizations finance activity to include business planning, budgeting, forecasting, grant management, and accounting for both non-profit and for-profit funds. The CFO is responsible for the management and development of the finance team staff and oversees the administration of an $8,000,000+ annual operating budget received through a variety of revenue sources to include private donors, philanthropic organizations, federal grants, loans, and generated organization income.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation: $55,000-$70,000 based on experience
Position Type: Full-time, permeant

Position Location: TVCDC Porcupine Offices with regular regional travel and occasional national travel required

Employment Classification: Salaried/Exempt, upon completion of probationary period

Benefits:

·       Up to 4 hours per week, paid, to participate in Lakota Language Learning Class;

·       Up to 25 minutes daily, paid, to participate in a wellness activity;

·       Priority enrollment for children in Lakota Immersion Childcare (space depending);

·       Paid administrative leave during inclement weather closures.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

·       Responsible for all accounting, financial reporting, analysis, forecasting, strategic planning, and capital management.

·       Provide strategic fiscal recommendations to Executive Director, Board, Leadership Team, and Initiative Directors to provide insight into the Organization's operations and business plans for multi-year budgeting and long-term planning.

·       Ensure completion of financial statements, tax documents, and preparation of all other financial reporting requirements.

·       Lead annual audit preparation activities, working with independent auditors and financial consultants to ensure prompt completion of audits, to include A133 Federal Audits, and any other financial/accounting requirements.

·       Provide leadership, direction, and management of finance team.

·       Establish and develop relationships with external partners and stakeholders.

·       Regularly review all formal finance procedures, ensuring adherence to fiscal best practices/controls, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance in financial functions.

·       Oversee payroll processing for employees.

·       Oversee grant allocation, working with initiative directors and finance staff to ensure proper utilization of funds.

·       Lead monthly financial meetings, assisting Initiative Directors in preparation of monthly and annual financial reporting materials and metrics analysis.

·       Remain up-to-date on nonprofit best practices, tribal, state, and federal law regarding nonprofit fiscal operations.

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

·       Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or Economics strongly preferred.

·       MBA and/or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in State of South Dakota or another jurisdiction is strongly preferred.

·       Five to ten years of progressive accounting/finance experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $5,000,000.

·       Extensive knowledge/proficiency in Quickbooks or other accounting software required. 

·       Skilled in leading, developing, and managing a team, with at least five years prior management experience preferred.

·       Practiced in grant funds distributions, draw-down requests, amendments/modifications, reporting, and overall grant adherence/management.

·       Consistent interpersonal and communication skills both verbally and in writing. 

·       Able to interact with/advice staff at all levels of the organization.

·       Exercise sound judgement, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance while also prioritizing mission alignment in fiscal practices.

·       Five or more years' experience working with Indigenous communities preferred.

·       Attention to detail with excellent critical thinking/reasoning skills.

·       Adaptable to a continually evolving environment, able to thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace.

·       Has never been convicted of, or plead guilty or nolo contendere to, a felony in a domestic or military court in the case of a felony involving an act of fraud, dishonesty, a breach of trust, or money laundering.

·       Demonstrated financial responsibility, character, and general fitness, with the ability to operate honestly, fairly, and efficiently.
