[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] ***Job Posting*** Center for American Progress - Program Coordinator, Generation Progress

Program Coordinator, Generation Progress

  • Reports to: Communications Director, Generation Progress
  • Staff reporting to this position: None
  • Department: Generation Progress
  • Position classification: Nonexempt, full time

Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Program Coordinator with Generation Progress to assist with its nationwide student debt organizing efforts. This position requires efficient management of a large workflow of diverse projects. Applicants should enjoy detail-oriented work and troubleshooting and be able to design a digital strategy that organizes and mobilizes individuals across all aspects of the campaign.

Now more than ever, a college degree is the ticket required for entry into the American middle class. Unfortunately, the skyrocketing cost of this ticket—and the resulting damage to access, equity, and post-college wealth accumulation—is risking the United States' future as a middle-class nation. These costs have also saddled 44 million student loan borrowers with more than $1.5 trillion of debt. Generation Progress has launched a multifaceted approach to address the student loan crisis, including by organizing student loan borrowers as a motivated and formidable electoral contingency.

Higher Ed, Not Debt (HEND), a component of Generation Progress' approach, is a multiyear, nationwide campaign comprising more than 100 coalition partners working to ensure that quality higher education is affordable and accessible to all without the burden of financial hardship.

The four core areas of the HEND campaign are:

  • Provide support to borrowers currently paying off the existing $1.5 trillion in debt.
  • Address causes of declining affordability and quality, including changes to state funding and financial aid policies.
  • Address the role of Wall Street and the growing financialization and privatization of higher education.
  • Provide opportunities for civic engagement.

Responsibilities:

This role will have two sets of responsibilities with equal weight. The first includes growing Generation Progress' own branded student debt organizing footprint. The second includes managing and growing Generation Progress' HEND campaign. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Work with Generation Progress leadership and American Progress policy teams to:
    • Identify opportunities and inflection points to engage a network of 40,000+ student loan borrowers and develop content for them on which to take action.
    • Track and identify opportunities to push for policy solutions at the national, state, and local levels.
  • Track and identify opportunities in the digital space to engage in the national conversation on education debt.
  • With guidance from Generation Progress leadership, work with and coordinate the HEND coalition partners in developing a proactive messaging and organizing strategy, then matching that strategy with long-term campaign goals; implement campaign actions in the field.
  • Implement various digital and traditional organizing actions and tactics to grow an effective Generation Progress college affordability and student debt program that engages grassroots activists, coalition organizations, and individual members of the HEND campaign.
  • Develop and maintain coalition relationships, which includes participating in and leading one-on-one, small, and large group meetings, as well as proactively identifying opportunities to broaden the coalition tent to be inclusive of all constituencies burdened by student loan debt.
  • Track the metrics and success of various campaign efforts.
  • Partner with American Progress policy teams on some original research and writing.
  • Working with Generation Progress leadership, develop and implement a strategy to channel student loan borrower energy from direct advocacy into electoral power.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least one year of professional online organizing experience.
  • Proficiency in basic organizing strategy, digital organizing tools, and contact management systems.
  • Experience growing an organization or campaign using digital or on-the-ground organizing tactics.
  • Experience working with nonprofit advocacy or campaigns.
  • A strong, entrepreneurial self-starter with the motivation to develop creative tactics to engage holders of education debt nationwide.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, including experience participating in coalition work.
  • Proven ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to Generation Progress', the HEND campaign's, and American Progress' mission and goals.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70.
