Communications Manager Job Description:
The Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to amplify the power of immigrant communities to impact the root causes of inequality, defending and protecting basic human rights, including the right to live without fear.
FLIC is a statewide alliance of close to 60 diverse member organizations and a growing number of individual members, including farmworkers, students, service providers, grassroots organizations and legal advocates, who come together for the fair treatment of all people, including immigrants. We accomplish our mission coordinating immigrant organizations and community education, organizing, and advocacy.
FLIC seeks equal rights for all Floridians. We work together to protect our communities from detentions and deportations, protect the rights of immigrant workers, promote pro-immigrant laws, support refugees, increase access to education for immigrant youth, and assist immigrants in their path to citizenship while increasing civic participation and economic opportunities for all communities.
Position Summary
FLIC is seeking a Communications Manager who will work closely with various departments, including civic engagement and development, and be responsible for ensuring clear and consistent communication with all of FLIC's stakeholders. The Communications Manager will lead the implementation of an organizational communications strategy that includes digital, owned, and earned media strategies, as well as the maintenance and development of infrastructure necessary to accomplish FLIC's communications goals.
Ideal Experience and Qualities
We are seeking an experienced, dynamic, and versatile communicator with a passion for social justice and immigrant rights who will increase the organization's visibility across multiple media streams and within the community. The Communications Manager must have strong interpersonal skills, the ability to juggle multiple projects with tight deadlines, experience with rapid response and crisis communications, a willingness to travel, and a deep knowledge of communications tactics and analytics. The role involves collaborating with staff across the organization to ensure the integration of communications work and the use of updated systems and tools.
Qualifications
Professional experience in strategic communications, especially with organizations working to improve conditions for immigrants and other marginalized communities. Preference is given to those with experience in advocacy communications, digital organizing, content creation or media relations.
Ability to conceptualize and execute a strong strategic communications plan and budget that defines the framing and messaging, and then lead and implement those communications strategies across FLIC's programs and campaigns.
Excellent writing and storytelling skills, including the ability to write compelling content across a variety of media, including press releases, talking points, media advisories, online content, print materials, and more.
Ability to generate press coverage and to oversee earned and paid media strategies.
Demonstrated ability to manage a press list, prep spokespeople, pitch stories, write and disseminate press releases, build relationships with reporters, analyze press coverage, pull media reports, and get LTEs and Op-Eds placed in local, statewide, and national media.
Knowledge of digital strategy and analytics, with enough proficiency in online organizing strategy to supervise and guide a Data and Digital Organizer who will be responsible for implementing FLIC's digital strategies and goals.
A keen eye for design and visual aesthetics, with the ability to work with designers to develop engaging print and online visual content, including flyers, memes, logos, brochures, banners, and more.
Experience managing a communications team and working with vendors, freelancers, and consultants
Highly skilled at prioritization and flexibility to remain focused on goals and able to solve complex problems under tight deadlines. Ability to plan and track complex projects while juggling competing priorities and adapting when needs change unexpectedly.
Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking in English and Spanish and/or Creole.
Ability to maintain a flexible schedule, including working nights and weekends, and willingness to travel extensively across the state and across the country.
Responsibilities
Lead and implement communications strategies for FLIC's programs and campaigns, defining framing and messaging
Optimize, update and streamline communications and data management processes, software tools, and organizational framework
Create and manage the production of all owned content and communications collateral, text, and graphic content
Oversee FLIC's public branding, social media, and digital presence
Update and improve the website and communications platforms
Create and manage an Annual Communications Plan and budget aligned with FLIC's Annual Operating Plan
Ensure quality and consistency of visual brand and core messaging throughout all external communications
Manage FLIC's relations with local, statewide and national media.
Do media and digital outreach for events and campaigns
Prepare members to be spokespeople
Track metrics and other communications benchmarks.
Collect stories from program staff, members, community members, volunteers
Supervise communications team, interns, and volunteers
