We are seeking a Legislative Associate to join our team to manage our legislative tracking and distribution process and to serve as a member of our climate advocacy team.

General Duties
The Legislative Associate is a full-time exempt position (37.5 hours per week) that reports to the Deputy Director, but works across the teams on legislative tracking and memorandum preparations. The prime responsibility of the Legislative Associate is to manage our legislative memo distribution process; the decades old accountability effort that ensures that New York State Legislators are fully aware of our views of environmental legislation that is before them.
The Legislative Associate will also serve on the team that advocates around the inter-related issues of climate change and transportation policy. This includes, but is not limited to, lobbying on and engaging the public in our efforts to move New York to an economy fully powered by renewable energy. The Legislative Associate will also play a role in grass-roots organizing and mobilization related to these policy issues.
The Legislative Associate should have a broad knowledge of environmental issues with a particular interest and knowledge of climate change and transportation. Experience in organizing and/or issue-based campaigning is also a plus.
Specific Responsibilities
Advocacy
● Serve as a front-line advocate that engages decision makers on climate change and transportation;
● Serve as a public spokesperson before the general public and the media;
● Work with the communications staff to develop and execute a communications strategy that includes electronic and web-based communications, media releases, and the development of other outreach materials;
● Work with program and community engagement staff to develop strategies for achieving the organization's policy goals;
● Conduct public outreach and be able to build and lead effective coalitions;
● Serve as a lobbyist and spokesperson before the New York State Legislature, administrative agencies and the media; and
● Conduct analysis of specific regulations, legislation, the state budget and other policies as needed.
Project Management
● Lead the organization's weekly legislative memo preparation and distribution process;
● Track environmental legislation before the New York State Legislature; and keep detailed records of legislator's voting records;
● Assist with the creation of goals for programs and projects including intermediate objectives and timelines for achieving them;
● Stay up-to-date on developments that influence programs and projects;
● Identify funding opportunities, develop grant proposals and foundation reports, and maintain relationships with donors; and
● Other management responsibilities include managing and overseeing Legislative Interns and the intern program and lobbying reporting.
Skills/Experience
● At least two years of experience in advocacy, community organizing, policy analysis, and/or government relations;
● A Bachelor's degree is required (public policy or environmental studies degrees are considered a plus);
● Ability to juggle competing priorities, manage multiple projects, and work in a team environment;
● Excellent verbal and writing skills;
● Strong interest in public policy and politics; and,
● Licensed driver with a willingness to travel as needed.
