[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] Organizing Director, PA Stands Up

Organizing Director

PA Stands Up seeks an Organizing Director to develop and execute our work plan to build grassroots political power to take on an entrenched system and revitalize our democracy.

Candidates should have a proven track record of managing complex electoral, legislative, and base-building campaigns, with excellent verbal and written communication skills and a sophisticated analysis of the current political landscape. This position will directly supervise three Deputy Organizing Directors. This is a high-level political leadership position in a collaborative, fast-paced, and innovative environment. The work will require travel, weeknight, and weekend hours. The position is directly accountable to the Executive Director.

PA Stands Up is an independent people-powered organization, by and for the many. We organize working people—black, white, and brown—across Pennsylvania's cities, towns, and rural areas. Our chapters develop grassroots leaders and organization to make a difference on issues and in elections. Together we're building the durable infrastructure that's needed to win governing power and enact a bold agenda for the common good.

Job Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Demonstrate visionary leadership to grow a multi-racial mass movement of working people across Pennsylvania.

  • Develop and lead a long-term strategy to build a powerful network of local chapters throughout Pennsylvania.

  • Oversee the growth, management, and budget of PA Stands Up's Organizing Department.

  • Set and meet base-building and campaign goals in our target geographies.

  • Represent the organization in local, state, and national coalitions; work with coalition partners on aligned campaigns.

  • Work with and supervise Deputy Organizing Directors to drive accountability, ongoing reflection, learning, innovation, and improvement.

  • Work with the Development Director to set and meet our chapters' grassroots fundraising goals, including membership programs and individual giving.

  • Exemplify and cultivate a work culture of support and accountability.

Electoral:

  • Oversee work to identify, recruit, and train candidates and staff from the ranks of our chapters and affiliated movement organizations.

  • Oversee an ambitious large-scale paid and volunteer electoral canvass program in diverse political geographies.

  • Work with the Development Director and external partners to design, execute, and support our electoral program in target geographies.

Issue campaigns:

  • Together with Deputy Directors and local chapters, build powerful local, state, and federal issue campaigns and achieve wins.

  • Develop and lead PA Stand Up's issue strategy and campaign workplan to produce desired electoral and policy outcomes in the mid-term and long-term.

  • Build a co-governance agenda and accountability strategy with elected movement leaders at the local and state level.

Communications:

  • Work with Narrative Director to integrate local chapter priorities into our electoral and issue campaign workplan.

  • Together with Narrative Director, help shape public messaging and communications strategy to support electoral and legislative campaigns.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in grassroots organizing, labor, and/or politics, preferably with experience in building grassroots political power with a culture of democracy and debate.
  • A willingness to pick open and principled fights with entrenched economic and political power (including a fight over the leadership and direction of the Democratic Party), while talking explicitly about how the powerful are using racism and fear to divide us.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and experience working in rural areas and/or communities of color
  • Strong commitment to racial, social, economic and gender justice
  • Strong commitment to independent, innovative political action by and for working people
  • Proven track record of planning, managing and executing complex electoral and legislative campaigns. Prefer experience leading both independent expenditure and coordinated electoral campaigns
  • Experience managing team members in a supportive and accountable environment

  • Experience with and knowledge of Pennsylvania politics
  • Acute political savvy and excellent analytical skills
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred
