This position also supports Community Change Action, an affiliated 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. While motivated by the same core values – equity, inclusion, and justice – Community Change and Community Change Action operate independently of one another and each organization has its own board of directors.

Position Description:

The Relational Organizer Manager will work as a member of Community Change's political/electoral team to help develop and implement Community Change's ambitious political/electoral strategy – building a relational organizing program of 250,000 people. The political/electoral team works closely with Community Change's field partners, organizing staff, communications team, policy team, and other teams to achieve the organization's mission.

What is relational organizing and how does it relate to the political program? Relational Organizing model for building collective power at scale to bring about social and political change. It is about engaging your closest relationships in a conversation about political change and action. The practice of "Relational Organizing" has a rich history in our country including the Civil Rights Movement and the United Farm Workers Movement. Recently electoral campaigns have used the process of engaging and tracking personal relationships and conversations to deliver a more impactful get out the vote request. We at Community Change/Action believe that this type of strategy can and should deliver impact in the 2020 Elections but it's capacity is greater than just electoral. We have the possibility of building an infrastructure that will strengthen our organizing and issue campaigns, as well as prepare us for 2021. Community Change/Action is making a big bet on this strategy and by May 2020 will have built a program that engages 250,000 people in conversation with the people they love.

A portion of time will be spent working with Community Change's sister organization, Community Change Action.

This is a one-year flex position.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Support the strategic direction of the Community Change/Action relational organizing work, and in coordination with Community Change's organizing staff and field partners, contribute to the advancement of the goals.
  • Build and manage the internal and external structure needed to get the relational organizing up to scale.
  • Facilitate the process to capture and share lessons and highlights, while making sure that they are shared with appropriate internal and external audiences.
  • Provide or facilitate the means for technical assistance to community-based organizations on a relational organizing and specifically how it integrates with their current electoral ambitions. This will include but not limited to: list management, plan writing, goal setting, targeting, budgeting and building a field infrastructure to achieve goal, integrative digital plan, etc.
  • Build the infrastructure of coordination and communication among our internal field teams that relate to state organizations participating on the relational organizing program.
  • Track the national landscape related to electoral organizing and relational organizing including development of best practices identified by other national organizations and networks, national constituency organizations, election protection organizations, and allies in the labor, faith, and civil rights arena.
  • Monitor demographic and political trends related to voting and civic participation to create reports.
  • Represent Community Change in coalition meetings, state tables and trainings taking into account our priority issue work at both a national and grassroots level.
  • Work with other Community Change staff to advance their understanding and use of relational organizing tools and strategies in the context of community organizing.
  • Travel throughout the country to work with local partner organizations, fundraise, and meet with grassroots community, labor, non-profit and political leaders as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment and passion to building the political power of low-income communities, particularly low income communities of color.
  • At least three years of experience in electoral work with a strong background in community organizing and demonstrated ability to relate to grassroots community organizations.
  • Interest and passion for developing systems and structures at an internal and external level.
  • Strong understanding of legal parameters for electoral organizing in 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) contexts.
  • Experience in working with local and national political coalitions.
  • Significant experience in electoral campaign planning, program development and budgeting.
  • A strategic mindset that encompasses base-building, coalition-building, public policy, communications, and field and electoral organizing.
  • Strong team and coalition management skills.
  • Excellent oral communication, public speaking, and writing skills.
  • Experience and comfort working in multi-issue and multi-cultural environments.
  • Commitment to economic, race and gender justice essential.
  • Experience in research and testing on electoral programs a plus but not required.
  • Comfortable using cloud-based technology including Google Suite and dynamic databases like Salesforce.
  • Written and verbal fluency in Spanish or other language a plus.

This person reports to: Director of Strategic Initiatives

Classification: Community Change recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in Community Change's bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Travel Requirements: This position requires some travel, about 3-7 days each month.

Salary & benefits: $70,000 – $78,000 annual salary. Community Change also offers an excellent benefits package, which includes 4 weeks of annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave between December 24 and January 1; 8% employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment (and 3% employer contribution for the first 6 months); and a choice of generous health insurance plans.
