[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] Summer Data Analysts - Economic Policy - Employ America - Remote Position

Hi all! I'm not the hiring manager for this, but I'll be doing some candidate review. Happy to answer any questions.

Summer Data Analysts

We want better labor market outcomes (more employment, better jobs, higher wages) for American workers. We'd like to hire at least one Data Analyst with a foundation in econometrics, statistics, and macroeconomics who is passionate about our mission. In particular, we're looking for a self-starter who can learn and work independently.

This is a summer job, with a duration of roughly 3 months. We are open to both full- and part-time candidates, can be flexible around your schedule for exact start and end dates, and welcome applications from both students and graduates. We're open to applicants based anywhere in the United States.

What the job looks like:
  • Conducting and replicating economic research and policy papers, including:
    • Data collection
    • Data cleaning
    • Data analysis
    • Data visualization
  • Aiding in the composition of articles and policy papers with the Director of Research and Analysis
  • Working autonomously on projects and resolving problems independently and creatively when necessary
  • Familiarizing oneself with latest macroeconomic policy and market developments

What we're looking for:
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Python or similar scientific computation language
  • Advanced undergraduate level knowledge of econometrics and statistical inference
  • Basic familiarity with established theoretical frameworks in macroeconomics and finance
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg and/or Haver is a plus
  • Ability to learn and work independently
  • Ability to communicate clearly and frequently with team members

How to Apply:

Please send a resume (or similar listing of relevant experience) and a cover letter (or other personal statement about why you're interested in working with EA). Let us know where you'd be based as well; there are some benefits to having candidates in NYC, but we're happy to work with analysts based anywhere in the US.

As we evaluate applicants, we'll be focusing on three things:
  • Do you have the technical chops we need?
  • Are you excited about the power of tight labor markets to improve lives?
  • Will you thrive in our remote environment?

Please try to address these! If you think you'd be great at this but don't have a traditional economics/CS background, that's OK, but we'll need your help to understand why you're interested and what you bring to the table.

You can send those materials to Kim Stiens at jobs@employamerica.org. Feel free to direct any questions you have to that same address.

What we can offer you:
  • Opportunity for impact. If what you produce is excellent, we will make sure it gets in the hands of policymakers, reporters and other organizations. It could end up influencing policy! And if you're planning to pursue a career in policy, it could be a great way to get your work in front of people all over the macro policy world.
  • A week of vacation. We'll only have you for three short months, so we want to make the most of that time together. But we also recognize that summer is a chance for you to decompress between busy school years. We'll make sure you get a full week of paid vacation during your summer internship.
  • Competitive pay. You'll be a W2 employee and earn a salary of $4,500 a month (for full time). And if you need a health plan during your time here, you're eligible for that too.
Economics tends to have a lot of gatekeepers, and we'd love to help boost the careers of people historically undervalued in the profession, including women and people of color. So, we encourage folks from all backgrounds, especially from historically marginalized communities, to apply.
