The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Temporary Field Director in the National Political Advocacy Department of the ACLU's National office. This role is located in Ohio.

The National Political Advocacy Department (NPAD) works to strengthen the efforts of the ACLU at the federal, state, and local levels of government. The department harnesses the political power that comes from having more than eight million members and supporters, as well as affiliates in every state. By organizing grassroots lobbying and issue campaigns using modern tactics, the ACLU seeks to achieve change as profound in the legislative, administrative and electoral arenas as it has accomplished through the courts.

Reporting to the Senior Regional Organizing Director, North, the Temporary Field Director will be responsible for managing a field and organizing program in support of a ballot measure campaign in Ohio. The position would start immediately and last through July 15, 2020, with the possibility of extension through December 1, 2020 if the ballot measure qualifies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement a field plan that meets volunteer signature collection and overall campaign signature collection goals by centering a relational organizing approach, developing volunteer leadership and teams, and recruiting a diverse base of volunteers that reflects the communities most impacted by the ACLU's work
  • Recruit and manage three temporary organizing specialists, likely based in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus, to achieve ambitious goals for number of signatures collected by volunteers, volunteer leadership development, and volunteer recruitment goals as outlined in the field plan
  • Locate and manage one temporary field office in Cincinnati
  • Manage implementation of statewide volunteer training program (both online and offline), in collaboration with national grassroots training team
  • Design and implement a statewide distributed field program for signature collection to complement in-person organizing and ensure that anyone in areas where organizers are not present on the ground who wants to collect signatures is trained and equipped to do so, in consultation with national distributed organizing team
  • Plan and execute large mobilization events throughout the campaign as needed for volunteer recruitment and earned media
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the ballot committee and the ballot committee campaign manager to ensure alignment with the plan to qualify the ballot for the 2020 general election.
  • Coordinate with paid signature gathering firm to ensure enough signatures are collected statewide and in target counties to qualify the ballot initiative
  • Collaborate with campaigns and organizing teams at the ACLU-OH affiliate to ensure that the field and organizing program for the ballot initiative campaign is executed in concert with ACLU-OH's long-term political goals
  • Manage data and reporting for the ACLU volunteer organizing program, and produce detailed reports on organizing work and signature collection on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
  • Collaborate with Communications staff to identify and execute opportunities to leverage field activity for earned media coverage
  • Work closely with the ACLU of Ohio to build long-term power statewide.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong commitment to a relational organizing approach that centers volunteer leadership and team development, delegates meaningful responsibility to volunteers, emphasizes volunteer growth and learning through trainings, and implements two-way communication with and appreciation for volunteers
  • Demonstrated ability to meet ambitious goals, consistently and on-time
  • Passion for training and developing the skills and leadership of grassroots activists
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including an ability to navigate and resolve conflict in a way that values and respects relationships with colleagues inside and outside the ACLU
  • A flexible team player who works collaboratively and shares responsibility and credit
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including some weekends
  • Strong organizational skills and ability. A self-starter and finisher with a demonstrated ability to manage details and follow-through with a minimum of direct supervision
  • A car, a willingness to travel within and across Ohio, and a valid driver's license
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance.
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Directly impacted by civil rights and civil liberties issues at the center of the ACLU's work, including voting rights, reproductive freedom, criminal justice reform, immigrant justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, or directly impacted by the criminal legal system
  • At least five years of organizing and field experience, either in a paid role or as a volunteer
  • At least two years of direct staff management experience
  • At least one cycle of  experience managing a field program
  • Experience with grassroots organizing trainings that both prepare volunteers to execute tactics in the short run and develop their leadership skills in the long run
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities with energy
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to work under pressure, including short-term crisis management and rapid response.
