RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and manage all work of a geographically-diverse team consisting of approximately 15 full-time staff and additional temporary staff and consultants, each of whom work with many additional organizers at the affiliate level
  • Design strategy and set goals for the program that are aligned with broader departmental goals and ensure success of the program as well as growth and development for staff
  • Directly supervise four staff (two deputy organizing directors, an associate organizing director, and an assistant), while overseeing the management of other staff
  • Attract, hire, develop and retain talent, and give clear and actionable feedback
  • Promote a positive environment and team culture
  • Manage a large, dedicated Organizing Division budget; make strategic investments in consultants, technology, grants, and other resources
  • Collaborate with other Deputy Political Directors to develop large-scale grassroots campaign efforts.
  • Help shape ACLU's grassroots engagement on key political issues and pending legislation; work across a multi-issue spectrum of issues that concern the ACLU
  • Closely track political developments and identify strategic organizing and advocacy opportunities for the ACLU, including opportunities for multi-state or nationwide programs.
  • Collaborate with national departments and affiliate offices to support the ACLU's organizing work, on a national and statewide level – with communications staff to contribute to earned media coverage of grassroots organizing projects and events; with the affiliate support department on working in states; with the analytics team on grassroots engagement experimentation and analysis; and with the Digital Department on identifying and acquiring new political technology to support organizing work
  • Apply a strong equity lens throughout all aspects of the work, promoting key values such as racial justice and gender equity
  • As a Deputy Political Director, help to advise the National Political Advocacy Department more broadly on all of its work

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Significant experience leading and developing teams of full-time organizers and remote organizing staff (not just campaign staff), and managing toward excellence in outcomes
  • Significant experience managing candidate, advocacy, or issue campaign teams
  • Experience cultivating inclusive teams with a commitment to staff growth and development
  • An understanding of multiple approaches to organizing including distributed, digital, and relational, with the ability to inspire and teach others about organizing
  • Experience using a variety of political advocacy technology tools (for example, NGP VAN, Action Kit, GetThru (formerly Relay), or HubDialer)
  • Experience with change management, especially as it relates to organizing
  • Strong project management skills and ability to take ownership and build broad support for new and emerging initiatives
  • Ability to work and communicate quickly and accurately, handle multiple projects and devote time and energy to the most important responsibilities, and to lead others in doing so
  • Demonstrated understanding of both the barriers and opportunities for organizing with immigrant communities, communities of color, and low- and moderate- income people
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts
  • Willingness to work some non-standard hours, including weekends, and travel when required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10-15 years of organizing experience, a significant portion of which has been in a leadership capacity (in addition to other political advocacy experience)
  • Experience with grassroots movement organizing, including campaigns led by directly-impacted communities, as well as electoral organizing
  • Experience developing, executing and/or evaluating data-driven organizing programs, experiments/tests and/or pilot projects
  • Experience within large, complex organizations, and understanding the importance of relationship building, both internally and externally
