Basic Summary:
The Human Resources Generalist carries out responsibilities in the following areas: benefits administration, HRIS maintenance, onboarding/offboarding, policy implementation, performance management administration, employment law compliance, and training/development administration.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Benefits Administration, which includes enrollments, changes, and terminations; claims resolution; COBRA, FMLA, disability plan, retirement pension administration; managing the annual open enrollment process; periodic audits of invoices and HRIS data; and ensuring that plans are administered in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and that plan provisions are followed;
- Employee onboarding and offboarding, which includes conducting benefits orientations and exit interviews;
- HRIS maintenance and data accuracy, partnering with Finance on payroll-related processes and issues;
- Manage HR-related reporting, which includes OSHA, EEO, and employee census;
- Manage Workers' Compensation process;
- Manage the employee performance appraisal program and salary increase process. Update and improve performance management process as needed. Monitor status of employee six-month review, one-year anniversary evaluations, annual performance appraisals, and all salary increases;
- Assist with the development and implementation of an organization-wide training and development program;
- Proactively identify and implement HR systems and process improvements;
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, which includes annual mandatory reporting;
- Coordinate employee events, i.e. health fairs, flu vaccine clinics, employee appreciation events;
- Maintain HR portal of the intranet, ensuring forms and information are up-to-date and relevant
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion with sensitive information;
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in human resources, business, organizational development, or related discipline.
Certifications:
PHR / SHRM-CP preferred
Experience:
· 3 years of progressively responsible human resources experience required.
· Full-cycle benefits administration experience is required.
· Direct experience managing HRIS required.
Equivalent years of experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education requirement listed above.
Skills:
· Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and HRIS required. Experience with ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred; Understanding of how these systems communicate would be highly beneficial;
· Ability to create and maintain efficient systems and processes;
· Strong written and verbal communications, attention to detail, and customer service/interpersonal skills required;
· Thorough knowledge and understanding of Federal and DC employment law (i.e. OSHA, EEO, ERISA, COBRA, FMLA) required; ability to become knowledgeable with state and local laws in the national areas in which Defenders operates is required. Experience with multi-jurisdictional organizations preferred;
· Ability to effectively and equitably interface with all levels of employees
· Dependable, detail-oriented, organized, and able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision

General office working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.
