MoveOn is a diverse and vibrant community of millions of people working together to create progressive change in America. We are an innovative campaigning organization that supports people throughout the country to take action through driving impactful campaigns that influence the behavior of people and institutions, shape the outcomes of elections, and expand the realities of what's possible. We organize to challenge entrenched power, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice and a vision of a country in which everyone can thrive.
MoveOn has a particularly important role to play in the Trump era. We are working to defeat Donald Trump and the GOP in 2020 by building a powerful, multiracial, and economic populist movement that will give voters something to vote for, not just against—and we're also working to defend communities that are on the front lines of Trump and GOP attacks, including immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQ community, and women. In service of that mission, in 2020 and beyond, MoveOn will drive impactful, movement-connected, multichannel, nimble campaigns aimed at impact.
The Email Fundraising Campaign Director is responsible for brainstorming, developing, writing, editing, testing, and optimizing compelling fundraisers with the aim of raising millions of dollars for MoveOn's issue campaigns and electoral programs. The Email Fundraising Campaign Director will also be responsible for managing several segments of MoveOn's email fundraising program, which makes up 30-50% of the total volume of emails that MoveOn sends to its members and brings in more than half of MoveOn's revenue.
Responsibilities:
You will have your pulse on the political news, the progressive movement, and MoveOn members in order to develop concepts for fundraising emails that inspire grassroots energy to chip in financially to make MoveOn's work possible.
You will write, write, write. You'll draft compelling, well-argued fundraising emails that will motivate members to donate to MoveOn's campaigns.
You will consult and collaborate with campaigners to articulate thorough campaign plans that engage and empower members and inspire them to give.
You will play a key role in MoveOn's fundraising program. To support MoveOn's efforts in 2020 and beyond, you'll work under tight deadlines, stick to rigorous drafting and testing schedules, and be ready to turn on a dime to rush out rapid-response tests when news breaks. The work throughout election season will be intensive, while still enabling you to maintain a work-life balance; time management is key—but since this is an election period, this isn't a job that will fit neatly within traditional business hours.
You will run core portions of MoveOn's email fundraising program. You will be responsible for major initiatives within email fundraising, such as bundling small contributions for candidates, merchandise, or large-scale testing initiatives.
You'll make your colleagues' work better (and your colleagues will do the same for you). In addition to writing original drafts, you will offer everything from minor edits to major overhauls to your colleagues' draft emails and other fundraising content to make them more punchy, compelling, timely, developed, and full of plans that excite MoveOn members and inspire them to give.
You'll work cross-functionally to get MoveOn's message out there. More and more of MoveOn's members engage with us via text messaging and social media, and part of your responsibilities will be to work with other MoveOn team members to build out cross-functional fundraising plans that go beyond email and to train other staff to write strong fundraising emails.
Qualifications:
Exceptional writing and editing skills for an online audience. You must have a proven track record of writing strong emails that motivate activists to act; a proven track record of writing strong fundraising emails is also a plus. You must be able to write in a variety of styles, ranging from short and compelling rapid-response drafts to long and thorough campaign summaries.
Strong experience in progressive politics and/or issue advocacy campaigning. A huge amount of MoveOn's fundraising is grounded in progressive politics and issue advocacy campaigning. Experience in one of these areas is a must, and experience in both is a plus.
Attention to detail and the ability to think analytically. You must be able to stick to demanding schedules, clearly communicate with colleagues as timelines change, and manage multiple drafts and multiple versions of the same draft—for example, managing monthly, weekly, and one-time versions of the same draft email.
The ability to make long-term plans but also be nimble. Some of our fundraising plans are optimized slowly and methodically, while others are based on the rapidly shifting news environment.
Skill, sensitivity, and thoughtfulness around race, gender, class, and other aspects of identity. You need to have the sensitivity and skill to engage in nuanced conversations about these topics in your internal and external communications.
Team spirit. MoveOn has a big, important impact on the world, with just a small staff. To have the impact we do with a relatively small team requires us to work together, trust each other, communicate honestly, and pitch in on all major projects, as well as on daily tasks, large and small.
Location: Position may be based anywhere in the continental United States. Staff may be asked to work East Coast hours regardless of location. May require occasional travel.
Reports to: Director of Email Fundraising
