Free Press is a national nonprofit that fights to save Net Neutrality, achieve affordable internet access for all, uplift the voices of people of color in the media, challenge old and new media gatekeepers to serve the public interest, end unwarranted surveillance, defend press freedom and reimagine local journalism.
We are expanding our News Voices journalism program into Philadelphia, focusing on a collaborative project that aims to replace prevailing media narratives of the criminal legal system with complex stories about trauma, safety, crime and criminal justice. The journalism project manager is a key position in the launch of this ambitious new project that will reimagine and reinvent the way newsrooms approach crime reporting to better center the needs and perspectives of Philadelphia's communities.
The journalism project manager will organize with journalists and storytellers to end the "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality in news coverage, and lift up narratives that better represent the community. They will build power with city residents, local leaders, and journalists to create new norms and culture about the "crime beat" that center the perspectives of city residents and challenges the influence law enforcement has in local reporting.
The typical starting salary for a manager at Free Press is $55,000–65,000. We also offer excellent benefits, including medical, vision, dental, and disability insurance; retirement benefits; health reimbursement, dependent care and commuter-expense accounts; up-to-date IT systems; and a total of nine weeks of paid time off each year.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and we encourage candidates to submit applications by February 14, 2020. This search will remain open until the position is filled. The ideal candidate will be available to begin work in March 2020. Learn more and apply here.
Free Press provides reasonable accommodations for the application, interview, or any other aspect of the employee selection process to applicants with disabilities. Please e-mail amartyn@freepress.net to request an accommodation.
