[jobsthatareLEFT by GAIN] Organizer — Red to Blue Congressional, Upstate New York

NY-24 Organizer

The Race

Dana Balter is an educator and organizer running to represent New York's 24th district in Congress. This is one of Democrats' top opportunities to flip a seat from red to blue in 2020 and expand our majority. The district is in upstate New York and the largest city is Syracuse. Dana is a progressive candidate who would be the first woman to represent the district in Congress. Dana has been endorsed by EMILY's List, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus who are targeting this as a top-priority race in 2020. Dana ran a strong grassroots campaign as the Democratic nominee in 2018, closing a 20 point gap and now just needs to move 2.5 points to flip the seat this November.

Job Description

Organizers are on the frontline of the campaign—building and managing a movement to put power in the hands of the people where it belongs. Organizers will recruit, train, and supervise teams of volunteers and interns to register voters and win votes at the doors and over the phones.

Reports To: Organizing Director

Responsibilities Include

  • Recruiting, managing, and training volunteers and interns to participate in executing the campaign's direct voter contact plan, which includes canvassing, phone banking, and voter registration.

  • Developing the leadership capacity of volunteers across NY-24 so they are able to semi-autonomously organize their neighbors and execute canvasses, phonebanks, and voter registration drives.

  • Managing relationships with key community leaders, activists, and grassroots organizations.

  • Serving as the public face of the campaign—implementing the campaign's organizing plan while developing innovative approaches to volunteer recruitment, voter persuasion, and voter mobilization.

Ideal Characteristics

  • Genuine passion about progressive politics, electing women, and fighting for a better future.

  • A hard-working, honest, and self-disciplined emerging leader with the ability to work long hours and adapt to a fast-paced work environment.

  • Ability to contribute to a positive, collaborative, safe, welcoming, and inspiring work environment for all members of the team—including fellow staff, volunteers, and interns.

  • Ability to organize in diverse communities, including black, immigrant, refugee, & LGBTQ communities.

  • A cycle or two of experience as paid staff, an intern, or a volunteer is ideal but not required.

  • A car or reliable form of transportation and a laptop are required.

Compensation is $3,000/month along with the option to participate in the campaign's health insurance program. Supporter housing is a possibility upon inquiry. Interested applicants should send their resume to josh@electdanabalter.com.

The Dana Balter Campaign For Congress is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on race, gender, or religion. Women, people of color, and members of the LGBT community are strongly encouraged to apply.
