Job Summary:

The Community Organizer will be responsible for helping PPAV achieve its legislative and grassroots organizing goals. Key areas of focus will include working with the field team at the state office and in affiliates to implement the statewide advocacy field plan; including facilitating lobby days or days of action, coordinating regional phone banks and door-to-door canvassing efforts, doing community outreach, and recruiting and supervising volunteers and interns.

 Responsibilities:

  • Implements a field organizing program designed to increase the number of Planned Parenthood activists in targeted region. 
  • Manages plan for regional grassroots organizing, including the formation of local core activist groups and volunteer leadership program.
  • Supervises the development of supportive student organizations at local colleges/universities.
  • Recruits, trains, and mobilizes volunteers as needed to carry out grassroots organizing plans. This includes phone banks, canvassing, rallies, petition drives and other forms of grassroots action. 
  • Helps to recruit and mobilize key legislative or "grasstops" supporters in the region.
  • Coordinates grassroots lobbying program during the General Assembly session, including the statewide day of action and smaller scale affiliate grassroots contact with legislators.
  • During electoral cycles, focuses heavily on campaign efforts supporting candidates endorsed by PPAV and the Planned Parenthood Political Action Fund.
  • Recruits and supervises interns.
  • Manages health center advocacy program.
  • Complete timely data entry and management.
  • Work with community partners to ensure meaningful collaboration 
  • Demonstrate Planned Parenthood's  In This Together service ethos by ensuring that the people who make our mission possible are supported, cared for and engaged.

Qualifications: 

BA or BS Degree.  Computer literacy. Understands and abides by VLPP mission and core values, including diversity, self-determination, privacy, and access; practices these values in the work environment with internal and external audiences. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to successfully relate to and motivate volunteers. Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask. Ability to work independently and in team settings. Proven experience excelling in fast paced and metrics driven work environments. Comfortable speaking to and interacting with the public, self-motivated and detail-oriented. Willingness to think creatively and solve problems proactively. Valid driver's license and reliable access to a vehicle. Worked at least one electoral cycle as a full-time staff person. Knowledge of ACA and Virginia politics a plus.
