Context: Sierra Club is the nation's largest environmental grassroots organization and in 2020 it will make its biggest investment in political organizing ever. Sierra Club is hiring a Political Distributed Online Organizer to prepare the infrastructure for and execute on large scale distributed political activity during the election cycle.
Scope: The Political Distributed Online Organizer will work with internal campaign leadership, chapters, and departments to implement a national online volunteer recruitment, training, and mobilization program. The mobilization program will focus on using distributed organizing models to leverage key strategic program tactics; canvasses, phonebanks, and textbanks in support of endorsed candidates.

Job Activities:
- Builds and manages a distributed volunteer network to execute the direct voter contact program (including texting, phone banking and canvassing) that will elect climate champions and build the environmental movement in targeted states.
- Creates and manages training materials for volunteers, activists, and staff to support direct voter contact programs.
- Ensures all Sierra Club business policies, business practices, and Federal and State laws are followed while executing strategic program tactics.
- Coordinates business requirements and collaborates with the Business Analyst, IT and Product Management to design, select, deploy, and manage a distributed organizing technology suite
- Uses mobile tools, including broadcast SMS and peer-to-peer tools, to communicate with members and supporters to support various campaign activities. Trains and enables organizers, volunteers, and activists to use these tools effectively in their work.
- Works across departments to plan and run experiments to test new and innovative distributed organizing strategies and tactics. Uses Sierra Club data systems to test, track and analyze results. Evaluates learnings to inform future strategies.
- Continually finds ways to identify and recruit/convert new supporters, reach new and diverse audiences online and get them involved and excited in online programs. Reaches out and engages online volunteers to win campaigns, build power and raise funds. Builds and cultivates a distributed network of volunteer organizers to support Sierra Club initiatives and programs.
- Develops culturally-competent, values-driven, and data-informed distributed digital strategies to grow, engage, and support the work in frontline communities.
- Acts as a resource to Sierra Club staff across departments in advising and training on distributed organizing best practices. Travels to, organizes and coordinates training events, strategy sessions, field meetings, visibility events, or other large events and conferences as needed.
- Assists with the coordination of vendors as appropriate.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as directed
- Two to Four years' experience in field organizing, online organizing or campaigning.
- 1-2 years' experience with volunteer-led or distributed campaigns and political campaign technology tools such as VAN, Salesforce, and Hustle.
- Proficient computer skills and prior experience or aptitude with internet applications including email, constituent relationship management or other related data systems (Sierra Club uses VAN and Salesforce), social networking systems and web applications.
- Excellent writing and editing skills. Demonstrated skills in writing and production of online campaign materials. Good verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively in an action-oriented office.
- Strong project management skills and experience leading diverse sets of stakeholders to align around strategies and plans
- Ability to work independently, cooperatively and effectively with public, staff and volunteers.
