Hi everyone,
About Momentum
Momentum is a volunteer-driven learning community and movement incubator dedicated to understanding and building popular movements for progressive change. We believe social movements are necessary for people to realize their true power and generate the political will to win a long-term vision of justice.
Momentum's goal is to develop the strategic leadership that will make what is truly necessary winnable through popular movements, and to leave the next generation with models and best practices of organizing that can continue to be shared, refined, and updated. The majority of the Momentum community is comprised of young, working-class people of color who are eager to learn from each other and from history how to build movements that will dramatically bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice.
Our programs currently include a training on the foundations of movement-building, advanced training and skillshares for alumni, a cohort for leaders designing new movement organizations, as well as practical research on movement-building (including lessons from our own community and the wider field).
Managing Director Position
Momentum is seeking a full-time Managing Director to oversee the growth of our organizational structure and health of our organizational culture. As our community, our programming, and our staff expand, Momentum needs someone who can track and fill gaps in our internal systems to ensure that this expansion is equitable and impactful. This position will be responsible for guiding our team through organizational growth; building out new systems for operations and HR; ensuring that the staff is connected, coordinated, skilled up, and supported by an effective management structure, and establishing clear systems of communication and decision-making to unleash the creative potential of our learning community.
While the Managing Director will attend trainings and other programming as needed, the position's primary focus will be on the structure and culture of the organization and particularly its staff and volunteer leadership.
This is a remote position; candidates can be based anywhere in the US.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
The Managing Director reports to the Executive Director, and is responsible for the following:
Ensuring that Momentum's structure and culture are intentional, explicit, and in support of our goals. This includes staff roles and teams as well as volunteer coordination and development.
Supporting the healthy growth of a rapidly-growing multiracial leadership team to responsibly hold and navigate rank, power, and identity. This will include facilitating portions of staff meetings and retreats on a regular basis.
Serving as a manager of managers: overseeing systems of staff supervision, evaluation, communication, professional development, decision-making, contracting, hiring and staff transitions. This position will also supervise several staff.
Developing robust HR policies which will support Momentum in being sustainable, equitable, and strategic. Managing Director will also oversee the legal compliance of the organization's policies in consultation with a lawyer.
Guiding staff in building new and effective operations practices and systems as needed.
Ensuring that we have mechanisms for continuous learning and improvement across the organization.
Supporting organizational planning.
Qualifications
We're seeking candidates who excel in relationship-building, creating and refining organizational systems, and management. Candidates should have:
A track record of developing and maintaining strong relationships in a multiracial organization.
Demonstrated skills in group facilitation, especially as it relates to group dynamics and decision-making.
A demonstrated commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles.
Ability to manage multiple projects and a growing staff with excellent results.
Excellent communication skills, including in areas such as giving and receiving feedback.
A demonstrated ability to work efficiently and independently, as well as an ability to collaborate effectively with others. The strongest candidates will be detail-oriented, practical, and reliable.
A demonstrated ability to develop new policies, procedures, and systems that help start-up organizations or new teams to function effectively.
A willingness to travel bimonthly to participate in staff meetings or retreats with volunteer leaders.
Covid-19 Addendum
The responsibilities of the position will not shift significantly since our team already works remotely, but the pandemic will require the Managing Director to be particularly flexible, resourceful, and innovative when it comes to building relationships and getting to know our existing systems and policies. All meetings and retreats are currently being held online, which means that the Managing Director will not be traveling until it's absolutely safe for our team to do so. During the pandemic, we are committed to supporting each other to take the time needed to care for ourselves and loved ones.
The Managing Director will be responsible for researching and recommending protocols during the pandemic related to safety, equity, etc. and ensuring healthy practices at all stages, particularly as we transition back to in-person gatherings.
How to apply
Interested applicants should submit a resume and cover letter to Nataly CastaƱo at naty@momentumcommunity.org by June 5. Applications will only be accepted electronically.

Momentum recruits, employs, trains, compensates and promotes regardless of race, religion, national origin, documentation status, disability, veteran status, marital status, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other basis prohibited by federal, state, or local law.
Women, People of Color, and LGBTQ+ people are strongly urged to apply and self-identify in the application.
We're a multi-racial team committed to justice and equity, and believe our ability to collaborate and achieve high impact is made stronger by a diversity of identities and life experiences. We're committed to high standards and working with deep respect for one another.
Salary: Compensation is negotiable. Our current staff practices needs-based compensation rather than market-based compensation, which means that staff are not compensated on the basis of the "value" of their work (which is invaluable!), or their level of experience or expertise, but rather on the basis of their financial needs. We currently have budgeted $45-65k for this position, and will be glad to talk more with you about your financial needs and our compensation process.
