Title: Legal Director, International Digital Accountability Council (IDAC)

The International Digital Accountability Council (IDAC) is a dynamic new non-profit organization at the intersection of law, policy, and technology. Our focus is on improving trust and accountability online by ensuring that app developers and tech companies respect users' privacy and are held accountable for how they use personal information. We work with a wide range of stakeholders around the world to identify and remedy risks online. We investigate data practices in the commercial sector and help improve these practices through education, outreach, monitoring, and reporting. We are seeking to hire a full-time Legal Director to join our team; lead high-impact privacy, data protection, and consumer protection investigations; and coordinate the internal legal aspects of our operations. This position requires a background in consumer protection, digital policy, and/or privacy. Prior experience with investigations preferred but not required.
Key responsibilities for the position include: working closely with the President and Chief of Staff to shape the key legal and policy initiatives of our non-profit; undertaking independent research, analysis, and writing on emerging legal, tech, and policy issues; working with technologists; collaborating with stakeholders; and performing in-house counsel tasks.
Qualifications:
Licensed attorney with J.D. from ABA accredited school
5+ years' experience in relevant legal, policy, or technical positions
Familiarity with U.S. and European privacy laws and regulations
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated project planning, research, and organizational skills
Interest in emerging trends in technology and implications for users and society
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with technology, mobile apps, or health privacy issues
Ability to translate technical and legal terms into language that is accessible to a nontechnical audience
Startup or non-profit experience
Experience conducting general counsel duties
We currently have staff and/or consultants in Washington DC, Boston, northern California, and Germany. Remote work is possible.
