Summary
American Progress has an immediate opening for a research associate who will work to advance economic policies through research, analysis, and writing. The research associate will assist the American Worker Project by providing writing and research support, primarily on topics related to raising standards and building power for workers, with a particular focus on state and local interventions. This position calls for a highly organized, detail-oriented, and responsible individual on whom policy staff can rely to work independently and deliver high-quality research, including qualitative and quantitative analysis. Successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to multitask, set priorities in a fast-paced environment, and manage important communications on behalf of the team. They will have excellent research and organizational skills and pay careful attention to deadlines and follow-up communications. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact well with high-level policy professionals, both internally and externally, are essential.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct and support research on key policy areas, including strategies to build power for workers such as collective bargaining protections, workers' boards, and co-enforcement; ensure that government spending leads to good jobs for workers; and improve benefits delivery by involving worker organizations.
- Analyze datasets, read and summarize existing research, review state and federal legislation and regulations, and track and monitor policy developments.
- Write, contribute to, and edit accessible op-eds, columns, issue briefs, reports, rapid-response statements, and memos.
- Participate in coalition and advocacy efforts, including by assisting in the coordination and planning of public and private meetings and events.
- Interface formally and informally with external groups and policymakers.
- Assist in the development, implementation, management, production, and distribution of products.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
- At least two years of labor and employment experience or prior work experience as a research assistant or similar.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative research and writing with minimal oversight.
- Strong ability to formulate policy recommendations.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to communicate complicated policy matters to a nontechnical audience, as well as high standards of accuracy.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to balance multiple projects at once.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well on a team.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to take independent ownership and initiative.
- Training or experience in one or more commonly used statistical software packages—such as SAS, Stata, R, or Python—is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
- Commitment to American Progress' mission and goals.
This position is budgeted for $50,000 annually and is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70.
