ABOUT AT THE WELL
At The Well connects women around the world through transformative practices inspired by ancient Jewish Wisdom. At The Well is quickly becoming the Jewish voice in the wellness world and the wellness voice in the Jewish world. Our core product, Well Circles, are communities of women meeting for a renewed take on Rosh Chodesh, the ritual of marking the new moon. We leverage the following strategies to inspire women to join Well Circles and connect with their bodies, communities, and Jewish spirituality:
Engagement: We reach and teach individuals and organizations with trainings, physical and digital products, events, and campaigns that integrate health and holiness.
Education: We create and distribute webinars, zines, blogs, and videos that connect the dots between Jewish spirituality and women's mental, emotional, and physical health.
Expansion: We work hard to measure, track, and scale impact by understanding our audience and ecosystem. Data, fundraising, and infrastructure are major operational priorities in 2020.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Founded in 2016, we grew our team 3x in 2019 and forecast additional growth this year in spite of global financial trends. We are looking for a brilliant strategist-operator to take our growth to the next level and execute the management of a new strategic plan as our founding Chief Operating Officer. You are a mission-driven leader who is excited for the dynamic work of graduating our organization from startup to mezzanine. Where others see dreams, you see goals and a roadmap to reach them. You are a person who can hear ideas and then say, "we can do it like this," while still holding space for feedback and collaboration. You would be joining the team as the fourth full-time hire to work as an equal operating partner with Founder and Executive Director, Sarah Waxman. Our Chief Operating Officer will:
1. Run the collaborative creation and organized execution of our global strategy.
Lead Strategic and Operational Planning: You will create and lead the process that generates At The Well's strategic plan for 2021-2023, including revamped organizational identity language, budgets, goals, and org design. You will create and lead the operating planning for 2021 in a way that galvanizes the team and board.
Manage Implementation and Iteration: You will create team tools to visualize and manage company performance. You will manage the team to meet the goals set out in our plans, and you will bring the team together regularly to review progress and pivot thoughtfully as needed.
Take Ownership of Organizational Success: You will take executive responsibility for the success of At The Well. This means troubleshooting, coordinating, and understanding where we are and where we are going at all times. Sarah Waxman's passion is programming - and you will make it possible for her to focus her energy there and on fundraising.
2. Be a trusted operating partner to the Executive Director.
Work in Symbiosis: At The Well is a big believer in biomimicry. In nature, everything works in deep symbiosis; that is how you will work with Sarah. This is not the normal ED-COO relationship; you are going to build something different, sustainable, and beautiful together.
Revamp Revenue Strategy: At The Well has enormous potential to grow our revenue, both earned and philanthropic. In partnership with Sarah Waxman, our team, and consultants, you will create our first comprehensive revenue strategy (in conjunction with your strategic and operational plans) and oversee the implementation of that strategy with our team and board. You will take fundraising from a function to a team sport.
Build Our Board: You will be the strategist behind (and day-to-day manager of) the board in partnership with Sarah Waxman and Board Chair, Jenn Goldstone. You will work collaboratively with Sarah to recruit and leverage a deeply engaged, passionate board.
3. Lead our team and accelerate their individual growth.
Collaborate as a Coach: At The Well is a small and dynamic team that operates in a flat structure. Almost all staff members inhabit different roles as it pertains to our various projects. This means that everyone has opportunities to lead and grow - and that everyone has growth edges. As the most experienced professional on the team, you will be looked to for guidance and support. You will need to be proactive, generous, and tactful with your coaching.
Manage Performance and Productivity: You will come to (directly or indirectly) manage At The Well's entire all-remote team. In the beginning, this means becoming the supervisor to our full-time Director of Marketing and Senior Program and Operations Manager, as well as our Finance and Accounting consultants and Legal Counsel.
Create Pipelines and Policy: You will be At The Well's talent lead, responsible for training, compensation, talent management, and people policy. You will also be the person leading the vision for talent growth in accordance with At The Well's established culture. You will be in charge of helping the team envision, understand, and grow into their future with the organization.
Manage Team Growth: You will be charged with workforce planning. This includes scoping, searching, and hiring for additional roles as we grow.
Organize and Inspire: It will be your job, in close partnership with Sarah, to transform this group of rockstars into a high-functioning, empowered, remote team. You will be responsible for setting and strengthening team focus, communication, and routines in accordance with feminine leadership principles.
4. Manage our operational functions and take them to the next level.
Build a Scalable Foundation: Build an operational function that can withstand growth from $700k annual budget (where we are now) to almost double that size (where we anticipate to be by 2023).
Own 100% of Company Operations: You will take full accountability for a portfolio of functions: Planning & Strategy, HR, Administration, Information Management, People & Project Operations, and Expansion. For more on functions and sub-functions, check our FAQ.
Drive with Data: You will integrate our web, social media, fundraising, and network data into decision-making and performance management. You will work closely with our Operations Manager to leverage the full power of Salesforce.
