The Community Justice Action Fund (CJAF), a project of Tides Advocacy, is a nonprofit organization building
power for and with communities of color to end gun violence. We were formed by activists and survivors of
gun violence to help support and empower communities directly impacted by violence. CJAF focuses full-time
on building power and infrastructure to end gun violence in communities of color. We do this by creating
organizing and communications strategies that engage and empower communities that are most impacted by

Position Summary:
The Policy Associate/Senior Policy Associate will provide advocacy, legislative analysis,
coalition-building and policy research around issues related to ending police and gun violence againstcommunities of color and will serve as a liaison on all policy issues for local, state, and federal legislation.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a confident communicator, innovative relationship builder, creative
thinker, and someone with a deep belief in the power of utilizing policy to make tangible and meaningful
change. This role will have a somewhat flexible schedule, including an expectation for some evening and
weekend work.
- Preparing frequent briefing and policy materials, legislative testimony, and legislative language (for bills, appropriations, and authorization).
- Monitoring gun violence prevention legislation, committee activities and identifying opportunities for CJAF to participate in events that advance policy for grassroots organizations on the front lines of preventing gun violence.
- Participating in local, state, and national coalitions that address gun violence prevention policy.
- Serving as an expert on the best policy approaches for ending gun violence in communities of color.
- Identify best practices, and trends in the field and in policy circles, and facilitate opportunities to engage and mobilize CJAF chapters and partner organizations.
- Working with consultants, interns and fellows to advance CJAF policy
- Working with the communications staff to raise the profile of CJAF partners with policy makers and offering content for web-based initiatives and social media.
This is a full time position that works 40 hours a week. This position can be virtual, based in Houston, or
