[GAINPOWER.org: Jobs That Are Left] Press Secretary - New York State Senator Brad Hoylman | New York, NY

New York State Senator Brad Hoylman (Democrat/Working Families) has an immediate opening for a Press Secretary based in his Manhattan District Office.

As a member of New York's new Democratic majority in the State Senate and the Chairman of the New York State Senate's Judiciary Committee, Senator Hoylman is a progressive leader in state politics. He is also the only openly gay legislator in the State Senate. Since Democrats won a majority on the State Senate in 2018, the Legislature has passed several of his major pieces of legislation, including bills enabling Congress to request President Trump's New York State taxes, banning LGBTQ conversion therapy, adding anti-discrimination protections for transgender New Yorkers into state law, ending non-medical exemptions for vaccination, lifting the statute of limitations for survivors of child sexual abuse to hold their abusers accountable, modernizing New York's surrogacy laws, and passing the Police STAT Act, for the first time requiring New York State to collect and publicly report data about the demographics of who is arrested and issued violations by police across the state. Senator Hoylman is also the lead sponsor of bills to keep ICE out of courtrooms, institute a tax on second homes owned by the ultra-rich, repeal the Walking While Trans ban, reform New York's parole system, mandate a return to 24/7 subway service, and much more. There's a lot more work to do, and we need your help to tell the story and make it happen.

The ideal candidate has at least 2 years experience working in communications for political campaigns, the press, and/or a government office; has exceptional writing skills; is highly organized and detail-oriented; has a sense of humor; and performs well in a fast-paced work environment.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • -Manage media relations for the Senator, including building relationships with key LCA and local reporters as well as maintaining up-to-date press lists.
  • - Draft press releases, statements, op-eds, talking points, media advisories and other written materials.
  • - Organize and garner media coverage for press conferences.
  • - Monitor news coverage of and relating to the Senator in real time.
  • - Collect, compile, format and maintain weekly clips.
  • - Manage the Senator's social media presence, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
  • - Manage and update the Senator's official website.
  • - Help compile and draft the Senator's twice-weekly email newsletter to constituents.
  • - Managing our district-wide print newsletter (Summer & Winter)

We are working remotely for the foreseeable future, but candidates should be prepared to attend occasional in-person press conferences in New York City and to return to our office in Chelsea, Manhattan and travel as necessary to the State Capitol in Albany when it is safe to do so.
