Senior Policy Analyst, Race and Ethnicity Policy

Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Senior Policy Analyst on the Race and Ethnicity Policy team. The Senior Policy Analyst's responsibilities will include developing and executing research plans; providing data analysis; writing reports and other products; and engaging with other organizations, researchers, and advocates to conduct research and advance policy priorities. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to innovate and work across issue domains and must have a proven interest and respect for critical and intersectional thinking.

Responsibilities:

  • Own an area of analysis for the Race and Ethnicity Policy team. This will include tracking major developments in that area, conducting appropriate analyses, providing commentary, and generating creative and workable policy solutions.
  • Build, clean, and merge datasets and conduct original quantitative analyses of race and ethnicity issues using statistical software.
  • Conduct qualitative research, including analyses of statutory, regulatory, and other policy documents, to determine their impact on communities of color.
  • Develop, implement, and manage the production and distribution of a variety of written products—such as reports, issue briefs, columns, and op-eds—that translate complex issues, policies, and analyses into digestible information for different audiences.
  • Provide research support for members of the Race and Ethnicity Policy team.
  • Elicit and provide feedback on written materials.
  • Manage projects independently.
  • Collaborate with other American Progress policy teams on cross-cutting issues.
  • Elevate the Race and Ethnicity Policy team's work through media interviews, briefings with elected officials and their staff, and meetings with coalition partners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in economics, public policy, sociology, or a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Four or more years of relevant, full-time work experience.
  • Ability to manipulate, probe, and clean datasets to ask interesting questions and share findings in a clear and convincing manner—including by using statistical software such as STATA, SPSS, SAS, R, or similar programs.
  • Ability to write well, presenting ideas and arguments in a clear manner that will engage and be understood by the appropriate audience.
  • Ability to identify equity and opportunity gaps in datasets and build clear arguments rooted in principles of equity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of civil rights and racial justice issues.
  • Knowledge of federal policymaking process.
  • Strong ability to formulate policy recommendations.
  • Ability to generate new and original ideas to solve policy problems.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to initiate projects and to balance multiple projects at once.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well both on a team and independently.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to American Progress' mission and goals.

This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by IFPTE Local 70 and budgeted for $62,000. American Progress offers full and competitive benefit packages. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
