Organizational Background
Founded in 2016, Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ), a project of the Tides Center, is a multi-state organization that aims to win new safety priorities in large incarceration states across the country. ASJ partners with leaders and advocates to advance state criminal justice reform through policy advocacy, coalition building, research, education, and strategic communications. ASJ also brings together diverse crime survivors to advance policies that help communities most harmed by crime and violence. ASJ's sister organization, Californians for Safety and Justice (CSJ), has been leading state advocacy efforts to replace over-incarceration in California with new safety priorities for the last eight years. With a substantial California staff and a strong track record, CSJ operates as ASJ's flagship state advocacy effort. Additionally, Alliance for Safety and Justice Action Fund, a project of Tides Advocacy, is the 501 (c)4 arm of both ASJ and CSJ.
Position Summary
ASJ seeks a Senior Manager, Communications to join a fast-paced, growing team working to reform state criminal justice policy and transform the national dialogue on crime and incarceration. The Senior Manager, Communications will report directly to the Chief Communications Officer (CCO) and support them in ensuring ASJ has a high functioning, effective Communications Department. This position will coordinate and manage communications staff to execute on core communications activities with a keen attention to deadlines and priority objectives for the organization. The Senior Manager will lead project and team management, facilitating the timely completion of highly impactful communications objectives. The position is integral to advancing strategies that enhance our profile, reputation, influence and brand narrative, and will work with teams across the organization to maximize the potential of all communications.
The right candidate is a mid to senior level public relations professional who knows how to drive toward key communications deliverables despite a rapidly shifting campaign environment. The successful candidate will have high-level communications experience in the policy and advocacy space, and strong project, staff and team management experience. As a part of the Communications department, this individual will partner with the CCO in department oversight to prioritize communications projects, ensure communications deliverables are met, and work closely with key Communications staff to support collaboration across all departments and external stakeholders to support the advancement of state based campaigns, coalitions and constituents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Team Management (50%)
- With oversight from the CCO, supervise a team of up to 4 full-time staff; provide strong leadership, vision and coaching for direct reports to advance team development
- Work closely with the CCO to ensure that the communications department is driven by clear deliverables and able to meet deadlines and execute fast turn around communications needs with strong clarity of message and effective use of all of the department's resources
- Ensure communications staff have what they need to achieve deliverables and complete communication work products in a timely and quality fashion, including helping them receive responsivity from leadership and helping ensure clarity of goals and priority messages
- Work closely with the CCO to ensure the communications team is driving communications products and goals in alignment with grant deliverables and development needs
- Work closely with the CCO to ensure clarity across Communications roles and job descriptions, including associated deliverables, advising on team strategies and improvements to maximize efficiencies and performance
- Work closely with the CCO and Program Manager to identify and implement structures for optimal team performance and collaboration, including weekly team meetings, onboarding, training and coaching of Communications staff, department systems, and team-wide communication
Project Management (40%)
- Working closely with the CCO and the Communications Program Manager, track key priorities and deliverables for the Communications department on a weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis in line with broader organizational goals; ensure alignment with Communications team 1:1 check-ins and team meetings accordingly
- Support synergy and management of priority work across Communications department teams and staffs
- Writing, editing and collateral production: review and/or draft a range of documents and resources—both print and online—for media, public education and community outreach, and other purposes in collaboration with other staff
- Collaborate with the Research & Publications department to support the production of annual reports, educational materials, brochures, fact sheets, and materials
- Other duties as assigned by the Chief Communications Officer
Communications Strategy (10%)
- Facilitate collaboration and communication with departments and leadership roles across ASJ/CSJ to ensure alignment with Communications goals and objectives
- Shape and support short- and long-term communications goals, and ensure messaging and strategic clarity across department and all channels
- Advise on communications strategies, when needed, including determination of ideal communications channels and tactics for distributing information, promoting advocacy campaigns, publicizing events, broadening audiences, and making ASJ/CSJ's work accessible and relevant
Experience
- 5-8 years of public relations or communications experience in policy and/or advocacy
- Experience working with diverse communities and a deep commitment to social and racial justice
- Experience supervising and managing people to ensure staff can achieve high impact deliverables in a rapid pace, campaign-oriented environment; strong team and people management experience
- Experience working for a national or multi-state organization; experience supervising staff across state lines preferred
- Experience working at a PR firm with policy and advocacy clients preferred; account and client management experience, including strong management across a portfolio of clients and accounts
- Understanding of strategic communications from strategy to implementation and oversight
- High proficiency in public relations, including editing, reviewing and writing skills
- Demonstrated experience in managing communications, media relations, and marketing programs to advance an organization's mission and goals
- Strong project management skills; high level of energy and self-motivated
- Prior experience interacting with the criminal justice system is preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent relationship skills are absolutely essential for this position
- Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence required
- Proficiency using office productivity software, including Microsoft Office Suite
- Photoshop and/or other Adobe Creative Suite experience a plus
- A flexible and enthusiastic approach to work, including the ability to work collaboratively
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, listen and learn from feedback, make decisions in accordance with established policies and see projects through to completion
- Comfortable with Mac laptops generally and Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel in particular, Google Drive experience a plus
- Sense of humor is a plus!
Organizational Relationship
Reports to the Chief Communications Officer and works in close coordination with the Development team.
Physical Demands
Must be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time. Some travel may be required.
Work Environment
Oakland, CA, Washington, DC, NYC and Los Angeles based. Some travel required. Work hours, dependent on deadlines, may sometimes be odd and include occasional night or weekend assignments.
