Job Opening: Communications & Campaigns Manager
The Virginia Conservation Network (VCN) seeks a committed and motivated individual to join our leadership team and oversee internal and external communications campaigns for the organization. The Communications & Campaigns Manager will work with VCN's staff & Network Partners to develop and implement strategic and creative communications initiatives to advance climate action, restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay, create access to parks and trails, ensure environmental justice for all, and more.

Founded as the Conservation Council of Virginia in 1969, VCN began as a roundtable of major conservation groups and has grown to include nearly 150 Network Partners across the Commonwealth and a full-time staff of nine. VCN is committed to building a powerful, diverse, and highly-coordinated conservation movement focused on protecting our Commonwealth's clean air, clean water, and natural landscapes.
Playing a unique role in Virginia's conservation community, VCN helps the community speak with one coordinated voice. VCN is a facilitator of strategic action, a resource for partners statewide, and a constant conservation presence in Virginia's Capitol. The organization and its staff are focused on strengthening the conservation community as a whole and winning environmental victories that benefit all Virginians.
About the Position:
The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing the internal and external communications strategy for VCN. Through our annual publications, events, traditional media, and online presence, this individual will work closely with VCN's program staff and Network Partners to ensure the network's Common Agenda is elevated to our 150 partner organizations, as well as state legislators, members of the media, and the general public.
As the Communications & Campaigns Manager, you will be responsible for:
- Designing, copy editing, and promoting VCN's annual environmental briefing book, Our Common Agenda through online & print dissemination.
- Developing shared messaging materials for our Network Partners, including drafting and disseminating regular Partner Alerts which educate our partners about priority environmental issues and allow them to take action with a shared message
- Sending regular communications during the General Assembly session to partners, supporters, legislators, and the administration through VCN's email system, social media channels, and website. This includes managing VCN's internal and external Bill Tracker system during the General Assembly session.
- Coordinating shared messaging on priority statewide campaigns through VCN's Communications Workgroup, the group of communications professionals within VCN's network
- Providing communication guidance and recommendation for the VCN Program & Field Teams as well as partner organizations as needed. This includes writing and maintaining a VCN communications calendar
- Designing and producing marketing and program materials for VCN's events including the three main annual events: the Environmental Assembly, General Assembly Preview, and Conservation Lobby Day. In addition, working with VCN's team to develop strategies to increase attendance at each event
- Managing VCN's digital presence, including designing all VCN graphics and publications for issue campaigns and events, managing social media accounts through Hootsuite, developing regular content for the VCN blog, creating targeted emails for segments of VCN's email list, and providing actionable analytics
- Drafting, pitching, and placing stories, statements, opinion/editorials, press releases, and media advisories.
Qualifications:
VCN is looking for candidates with a minimum of four years of communications experience. Candidates should have a proven track record running communications campaigns including designing marketing materials, creating web content, and working with the media. Candidates should be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Mailchimp, and Salesforce (or similar tools). Experience working on climate change, conservation, public health, or social justice campaigns is preferred. Strong written and interpersonal communication skills – including copy editing – are a must. Additionally, candidates who apply should have a commitment to our issues and a drive to fulfill the organization's mission. We're also looking for candidates with experience with and a commitment to working with communities of different racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds. Flexibility to travel statewide and work outside of the typical business day is expected. If you meet more than 75% of the qualifications of this description, we support your application.
Details:
This is a full-time, salaried position. Richmond, Virginia is preferred; however, candidates throughout Virginia will be considered. Staff working outside of Richmond must have access to high-speed internet to participate in regular video calls with partners and staff. Once travel restrictions due to COVID19 are eased, this position will need to be in Richmond 2 – 4 times per month on average. All staff are currently working remotely due to social distancing guidelines. This position reports to our Executive Director and works closely with the rest of our staff. Some travel is required.
Compensation and benefits:
The salary range for most candidates is $45,000 – $55,000, depending on experience. Benefits include health and dental insurance (with fully covered individual premiums), paid vacation and sick time, holidays, retirement plan, and family leave. Other benefits include professional development opportunities and an annual staff retreat to a new scenic region of the state each year (staff retreat dependent on travel restrictions being lifted).
