[GAINPOWER.org: Jobs That Are Left] JOB POSTING - Political Director, Community Voices Heard Power!

Position Announcement

Political Director

Organization Overview

Community Voices Heard Power! (CVH Power) politically educates, trains, encourages and supports individuals and aspiring candidates of color as well as persons that ideologically align, support, and further its agenda to advance low-income communities of color across its five New York chapters—New York City and Westchester, Orange, Rockland, and Dutchess Counties—and subsequently, New York State.

Community Voices Heard Power was founded in 2012 by our sister organization, Community Voices Heard.

As a political organization, CVH Power is committed to intentionally changing the structure of New York's political landscape. We know that a seat at the table is not sufficient if we don't also wield enough power to enact the radical policy prescriptions necessary to truly center both urban and suburban communities of color.

Our sister organization, CVH is a member-led, multi-racial organization principally comprised of women of color and low-income families in New York State. Founded in 1994 by welfare recipients in New York City working to fight unjust welfare policies, CVH tackles tough issues and builds power to secure racial, social and economic justice for all New Yorkers.

 Position Overview

The Political Director directs our member-driven electoral, legislative and political issue-based campaigns. The Political Director builds and maintains relationships with key political figures, including federal, state and city elected and appointed officials, labor unions and progressive community organizations. The Political Director will also be charged with supporting current membership and increasing the membership.

The Political Director should be a risk-taking strategist with outstanding interpersonal skills and a deep commitment to building power for Black and Latinx communities through organizing and collective action.

Candidates should bring:

✓   At least seven years' political experience with one or more of the following types of organizations: political campaigns, progressive issue advocacy organizations, labor unions or community organizations.

✓   Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans for political, legislative or issue-based campaigns.

✓   Experience crafting and executing member-driven campaigns.

✓   Understanding of power mapping and analysis.

✓   Vision and commitment to unapologetically building power with low income communities of color.

✓   Ability to multi-task, humility and unshakeable hustle.

✓   Experience and ability to work and organize across racial and cultural lines.

✓       Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Candidates will be particularly appealing to us if they also have:

✓   Relationships in and knowledge of New York City and New York State politics.

✓       Experience working within and building coalitions.

✓   The ability to help develop members as leaders and political activists.

✓       Sense of humor, confidence and self-motivation.

✓   The capacity to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. ✓ Speak a second language (Spanish or Haitian-Creole).

Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits including vacation days, personal days, holidays, medical/ dental/vision healthcare coverage, and 403(b) plan.
