Role Overview

The Regional Director is responsible for VRL's overall advocacy strategy and approach in each state within their region. They will manage lobbyists and any in-state staff and are embedded participants in any coalitions.  A Regional Director is responsible for managing  campaigns that persuade or pressure elected officials and other decision-makers to accomplish advocacy goals, establish and maintain partner and coalition relationships, and create strategies that map out the path to accomplishing short, medium, and long term goals in their region on ballot access, voting restoration, redistricting, and other potential program areas. This is a completely remote role. 


This position includes oversight of regional state legislative campaigns including, but not limited to: Monitoring election policy in all 50 states and keeping up to date with legislation and developments, maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the legislative agendas and overall political environments in all VRL states, and identifying and maintaining relationships with validators, consultants, media, pollsters, and influencers. This position will manage a campaign associate to help in deployment of campaign tactics to advance pro-voter policies and fight voter suppression. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Advocacy and works collaboratively across departments to ensure policy fidelity and alignment with in-state and national partners. 

Responsibilities:
  • Design state specific implementation strategies and ensure our legislative successes translate into real world change & impact.

  • Build strategies in states that take into account the political and cultural context surrounding voting rights efforts.

  • Maintain working knowledge of political and cultural contexts around voting rights, voting access and voter suppression into account, make strategic recommendations on legislative advocacy and policy goals.

  • Demonstrate fluency in voting policy in order to engage substantively on strategy within a legislative context.

  • Manage and work in a co-creative manner with in-state coalition partners

  • Collaborate with Law & Policy to determine strategic in-state legislative policy imperatives.

  • Collaborate with Associate Directors in Law & Policy and Program Directors to ensure that short and long-term policy goals maintain fidelity to VRL's theory of change and strategic imperatives. 

  • Collaborate with organizing staff and other members of the Field, Data, and Innovation team to identify partners for capacity-building and other scalable organizing projects. 

  • Demonstrate an ability to work in a non-partisan / bi-partisan manner

  • Stay abreast of major electoral developments that may impact state policy landscapes.

  • Manage campaign/department staff to operate by VRL's values and theory of change.

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience including communications, research, organizing or partnership outreach with a proven track record of executing high-quality communications work in a fast-paced environment (issue advocacy or political campaigns are fine).

  • Demonstrated success as a project manager.

  • Organized, resourceful, flexible individual with strong time management skills and an ability to work independently on tight deadlines.

  • Intimate familiarity with the legislative process

  • Experience working with diverse communities and committed to acting on the belief that racial equity and social justice are critical components of our work.

Compensation & Benefits:

The salary range for Regional Director will be $120,000 - $145,000.
