[GAINPOWER.org: Jobs That Are Left] Center for Popular Democracy - Chief of Campaigns

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPDA, which played an integral role in protecting the Affordable Care Act, is hiring for a Chief of Campaigns position. This is a senior level position ($142,500-$165,000/year) in which you'd be leading 40 people across several progressive issue areas -- including education justice, justice transformation, economic justice, climate, housing and immigration -- at the state, local and federal levels. CPD fought repeal of the Affordable Care Act six times and changed the conversation around Supreme Court nominees with their work during the Kavanaugh hearings. They are looking for the right candidate to forward their mission of a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. The position location is flexible within the US, but must have the ability to travel to the East Coast.

I'd happily do informational interviews with anyone who wants more info.

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a full-time, senior-level experienced campaigner and manager who is excited to lead a Department to win progressive issue campaigns while building power for the CPD network, its members and our country.

About CPD + CPDA

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country.

We currently work with more than 53 affiliates in 34 states and Puerto Rico to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

We are seeking a Chief of Campaigns to manage several major issue campaigns, manage a department which is currently ~30 staff, and be a committed member of CPD's Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

The Chief of Campaigns will report to one of CPD's Co-Executive Directors.

Primary Responsibilities

The Chief of Campaigns will:

  • Lead and support the organization's efforts to win federal, state and local issue campaigns that simultaneously further our goals based on our strategic vision; base-building, confronting corporate power, dismantling racial capitalism, scaling our independent political power, and achieving an ambitious federal equity agenda while supporting affiliates to win state and local campaigns;

  • Provide leadership and coordination across CPD Campaigns Department (currently a 30-person department);

  • Provide excellent supervision/management of the Campaigns Department including coaching, staff engagement, team coordination, and staff development practices;

  • Ensure overall financial management for the Department, including budgeting and adjusting expenses along the way, as needed. Manage the fundraising plan to meet the Campaigns team budget annually and contribute to other organizational fundraising efforts;

  • Work with Senior Leadership Team (specifically collaborate with other chiefs to coordinate work across departments and support Co-EDs in their overall leadership of our work) to build our desired organizational culture, meet annual goals, and achieve our strategic vision;

  • Provide public leadership through writing, external meetings, events and the press;

  • Develop and implement team infrastructure (data tracking, reporting, etc.) to support success;

  • Work in deep partnership with affiliates, CPD/A Boards and other movement allies to develop and carry out campaigns that actualize our strategic vision, particularly by challenging racial capitalism and advancing our base-building goals.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate would bring with them a combination of the following experiences and skills:

  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, and an analysis of racial justice as an imperative for successful organizing and winning;

  • A commitment to building people's institutions as a core element of building power;

  • Ten years experience running and winning complex, multi-jurisdictional issue or organizing campaigns in a union or community organizing context;

  • Ten years experience managing large teams (7-10 people or more, preferred) and complex projects or initiatives;

  • Experience managing high level (leaders with 7-10 years experience, preferred) campaign directors and staff;

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment with staff from diverse backgrounds, working in varied issues with varied types of expertise, and spread across the country;

  • Significant foundation, individual donor, and other fundraising experience (preferably with a history of raising between $2-5 million dollars per year).

Salary and Benefits:

CPD/A is a unionized workplace.  This is a supervisory position, not included in our bargaining unit. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years of experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $142,500-165,000.  We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 14 vacation days per year, 10 sick days per year, 13 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals' 401K plans.
